georgetown herald publmmd by horn newspapers limbed 22 main strmi s georgetown ontario w c mpn publisher thursday january 20 1946 editorial comment prominent in their communities the weekly newspaper fraternity list two of its most prominent members in the deaths of arlof dills and joseph lake mr dills in his almost fifty years with the actor free press was that rare combin ation of master printer and newspaperman whose printing skffl was melohed with ab ility as an editor some years ago he ex tended his business by acquiring the milton weekly and his two papers were award winners year after year in the newspaper competitions in public life he served at various times on school library and ymca boards was a bandsman a former president of the fair board and chairman of north halton highschool district board mr lake whci started his printing car eer in georgetown and acton had the un equalled record of being in newspaper work for 64 years he founded the pow assan news in 1907 and was on the job until he sold the business two years ago and he played a major part in town affairs as mayor church choir leader mas ortic head and school board chairman while the two careers parallelled the acton editors activities were restricted nine years ago when he suffered a stroke while he remained mentally alert his illness re- stncted his physical activities though he was able to keep an eye on the business of which he was sp proud from a wheel chair mr lake was blessed with good health till the last and at the good age of bo was en route to south africa on one of the tripj which he had enioyed in his retirement years we counted mr dillsas one of our best friends n the newpaper business in tour learning years as a young editor he was nevertoo busy to help us with a prob lem nor can we recall any occasion when there were any business conh cts as some times happen between neighboring pub lishers we served as fellow members ot the high school board in the days when north halton was feuding about a central school and though we sharply disagreed and sa d so at meetings and in editorials personal vindictiveness never entered the picture that a man who had so much to offer should be restricted by hlness at the prime of life was a tragedy hard to explain better in the back room differences of opinion about the com position of the 1966 industrial commiss on occupied a good share of last week s town council meeting and recalled the controv ersy a few years ago when there was sev ral months of bickering before any comm s- sion was formed we have no particularly firm opm on on the format of an industrial commiss on there are good- arguments for having coun cillors as members of the commission and equally good ones for having it completely divorced from politics but whichever it b to be it is one matter which could be better threshed out m committee without the embarrassment of having citizens re jected as members at a council meeting good library an asset we lean to the idea of a separate com miss on with one counc llor as an exoff c o member to act as i ason between the tw5 not because we do not th nk that counc i krs would not make good members but because councillors have a busy enough round of meetings without saddling them selves with extra work wrjtten as this must be before tne current week s council meet ng it is to be hoped that the matter has been solved by the t me this ed or al s being read with georgetown mooted as on the br nk of an ndustnal expansion it would be too bad to focus attention on d fferences of opm on about the membersh p of the industrial commission which will play maor part in industrial location that georgetown has a horary second ione- rs well evidenced m the shipment of new books received the herald every fw weeks lists new purchases and we are always struck by the var ety of fiction and nonfiction available to the reading public- reading is a hobby which thanks to andrew carnegie and now to our central go- vernments has no financial barrier to its full enjoyment the world of literature is at georgetown s doorstep and there are more books m the hbrary than a methuselah could absorb in tins lifetime ibgether befbre p6kim is vuimijk mottorrtts lb think of pwestrians am ve versa news echoes fran hie herald of 10 20 and 30 yean ago a few resolutions i c0ul0 suggest
