arter tes are cleared as fast as possible and t s seldom that there are any maor bottle pecks to trap motorwts for any lengthy per wd of time it is in snow removal that the george town works department really shines a week ago for instance when there was the heaviest snowfall of the year on a saturday night downtown ma n streets queen and king streets among others we e night classes an that mosi res dents share the spir t of h s letter sugar and spice by bill smiley a red eyed teacher ever been on shift work host nurses have many in dustrial workers have farmers executives merchants office workers and until recently teachers hive not had that delightful experience chuckling merrily hed pile our plates with greasy eggs greaay ham greasy fried pota toes sometimes for i change there pretty annoyed at the idea of their 88pound daughters holding a 200pound football player in their laps all day so the school board fear lesaly comprised and voted for the shift system and thats why your faithful reporter lurches out of bed at 6 15 wildly grouping for the alarm clock has a coffee break i if there is one at 9 a m and eats lunch about 10 30 in the morning in theory il s wonderful teachers have all afternoon to sleep golf curl or hunt and the evening to prepare lessons good for the students too they have their homework all done by dinner ume and can watch tv or wash their hair or go to the poolroom all we have to do is get to bed a couple of hours earlier than in the good old days in practice iff horribter- wlvw prscut husbands n the afternoon with shopping scrubbing repairing nagclng if you sleep in th afternoon you if stark taring nmimlacat at night m you work or play you fall asleep in the middle of dinner baked potato naff chewed nobody goes to bed any ear lier than they ever did and what we wind up with is a pe dantry of redeyed teacher frayed at the edges facing gaggle of yawning teenagers some of whom were up at s a m to catch the school bus every 1 morning at 7 45 business directory for some years georgetown vias had a distinct asset m night school classes wh ch have operated at the h gh school georgetown has been most fortunately situated in hav ng excellent instructors n rts and crafts n or with n easy access of town and bes des the acadermc subjects taught by h gh school teachers there has been a fine variety of tra nmg available n such fields as learner work o i pa nt ng alu minum work and hat making the high school board has become con cerned however about keepmg on with the venety offered m view of small numbers of student end has ordered a study which could see a curt a iment in future it is not sensible of course to operate a course unless there s suff cient interest to ust fy rhe t me and expense of an i rut rue or the tee charged for a course s only a token and one cannot expect that too large en amount w ii be pa d either by a local board or a senior government we would hope that the end result w ii be a par ng of courses where interest is lacking and a possible offering of cour ses only every year or two but we would hope also that night school will continue to be an attraction in a town where it has been of so much benefit rirst time i ran into it was on the human organ my first job when i was 17 back in the middle ages some tunes known as the dirty thir ties i have been a stalwart champion of the working man ever since it was on a steamboat on the great lakes seven days a week for a dollar a day that most closely resembles a cement mixer couldn t take it we used to push the greasy gob around the plate and settle for some greasy coffee but th ellnchei that really made our atemachs haava that made us rush from the valley to our fob of ctoan- lavetortos was the i worked the eraveyard shm i except that in those days it was a shift and a half f rem mid- 1 triumphantly sing would night to noon and it seemed toi sing out you like nice boston be rolling a tittle every mid- clean pie 1 got now as you night just enough to make you probably know boston cream queasy pie is a rich nauseous concoc- tion of custard topped with sick at heart sick at stomach a 30 years later we groggily made our way to mn whfjn on the galley about 11 30 p m for m breakfast as you maj have gathered 1 the night cook was a jolly or am work theri and lenui gentleman called sing he hasn much during couldn i sing but his heart was u years in the right place he knew we needed sustenance for the 12 this year at our school were hours ahead j on a double shift a combtna uon of postwar baby boom and thi mail bag harley to halton webcly observations by dr harry hariey mp for halton as exfdcth the throne speeds has to date produced three votes one on the tech uieality of who should apeak aext and two votes of dob cod fidence in the new government in both of these utter votes the government was able to sur vi with the support of the or social credit members from alberta and british col ttmbia on neither of these votes despite their closeness the last vote was 134 to 126 was there any suggestion in the atmosphere of the green cham her in the house of commons that the government was any danger of defeat the house of coinmons was relaxed and this was evident even in the cal of the packed gal lenes where no one was antic- ipating in any way the defeat of the new government two more votes will tane place before the throne- speech 1 debate ends and it is antlcrp- ate that the voting pattern wdl repeat without any serious jwhiemi these votes do con 4ttm confidence in the govern j aeent and a loss of these supp- 1 etflnc votes would in all proba 1 ehtj precipitate a general elect government to consider th e budget estimates of various govt depts there is no indication as yet as to what par ticular legislation the govern merit will propose first on completion of the supply mot ion i had the opportunity last week of participating in the throne speech during this time i poke on medicare and car safety and the need for changes in canada s divorce and birth control laws i have been receiving much support for the views i expressed that in both of these latter matters our laws at present are grossly outdated and cry out for vasts at fhialime immediately j this a supply motion bibe eaoei which normally changes to bring them up date in keeping with modern day life it is expected that one of the first measures brought forward for debate will be cap ital punishment as i am sure everyone is aware this will be given time for debate by the government and a free vote given by members of the house of commons in keeping with the views of their constituents and their own views on this vi tal and important matter far as halton is concerned my mail and conversations i have had with many constituents is in favour of the abolition of capital punishment by approxi mately three to one new entrance and car lots for terra cotta area park regular visitors rff terra cot ta conservation ares may be interested to know that this was an all georgetown effort in addition to the leadership provided by last year industrial commls don the sign was renovated by r kramer construction and painted by jerry avery to m design a similar refurbishing might be effective at the eastern ent ranee to town where the jay cees v elcomo sign might be combined with the service club crests to provide a striking vitatlon to industry and other visitors unfortunately this most hesv iy travelled part of town is al so the most unsightly what is needed is a major treeplanting programme between norval hill and the delrex plaza combined with removal of the starkly ug ly hydro poles if wiring could be placed underground and tbe car lots made a little neater this critical spot could be made as attractive as the rest of the town sincerely jim warren tain this number is based on 4j5 persons per car there were s 174 campers during the summer in spite of poor camp ing weather fifty seven buses loaded with
