the mail bag on st patricks day recalls irish giants limebouse ont dear sir giants have been mentioned nfrom the beginning of time from goliath in the bible to gab- baras the arabian giant of an cie rome there have been many real giants most of them different from the legendary ones in that they were seldom strong and did not live too long the one i am thinking of and heard so much about was patrick mux phy bora at kiliowen co down june 15 1b34 many anecdotes were banded down from my grandfatherwho knew the family well his mo thers name was peggie cunn ingham and she was raised in the same district as grandfather he was 8 1 in height and there is only one record of taller insh giant he was very kind and humble and his great strength did not make him agg ressive in any way he was courteous to all especially the old and infirm with great res pect for law and order but woe to those who misbehaved in his presence once when he went to a foot hall match two players from opposite sides got into a hassle he seized them by the should ers lifted them up to his own height gave them a good shake and put them down again that was the end of that another time a neighbour was using offensive language he caught him with one hand and put him on the other side of a stone ditch walking along the road he came across a few men trying to get a cow out that had fallen into a drain he just put his arms around the cow and lifted her out with ease to the amaze ment of the bystanders like most giants he spent a lot of time on the road touring make his living that was when he met tom thumb the famous english midget whose real name was charles straton and who stood 2 7 they became great friends most people have heard of tom thumb his marriage was one of the highlights of the last century he reached the age of 42 patrick was not so lucky he died at 28 at marseilles france his remains were broughtbacfc to riltyoney one of ireland s most ancient burial places a celtic cross is erected there other irish giants were pat rick cotter 0bnan 8 3 born i kinsdale 1761 died in 1804 and edward malone born in co meath 1665 he stood t 7 in the british museum there are two handbills describing twin irish giants bo in 8 ft high they appeared at newcastle in 1784 and were described ai handsome and a sight to behold also in the museum is found the description of a boy giant cornelius degrath dated jan 31 176s he had a powerful physique stood 7 3 and wrlat measured ttyard notlo be outdone by the men is found a description of an irish lady giantess she was 7 high and beautiful ot form and face lived near portrusb not far from the giants causeway this strange formation as the name implies was built by mac cool the legendary irish giant as a road for the giants to get to irejand from scotland come to think of it a little giant strength would come in handy nowadays ball club sponsors st patricks dance a st patrick s dance held by the hornby ball club on saturday night march 12 at the hornby towers golf club with 160 attending mrs betty laklng held the winning ticket for the draw on a bouquet of roses which was decorated with ten one dollar bills a basket of bag find the money says avid hockey supporter rr no 2 streetsville march 8 1966 dear mr editor hockey being a favourite sport of mine i was pleased to see faced with deficit ask town for 1000 for hockey competing with the industrial commission and the cedarvale farmhouse on the front page of last week s herald it is certainly time that the finances of the hockey associa tlon be discussed on the front page it is also time that mr norton to mention one repres entative be rewarded for his begging for this is what he is essentially doing and not for the first time either i respect cr bui smith rec reation chairman for his hon esty but honesty will hardly er ase the 1500 deficit with which the minor hockey support group is faced he points that a grant would have to come from somewhere else surely cr smith is well enough infor med to be able to stake a few more tangible sources for their grant a question which comes to my mind is what has the council done with the money a lotted to our honorary mayor gibbons after all he did refuse it certainly our honorable mayor would not object to don ating his wellearned honorar ium to such a noteworthy cause as the hockey support group if not is this not indica tive of the apathy found among a substantial proportion of our citizens if an allowance for this assoc ation were made in our taxat ion system a parent might ar gue why should i contribute mysondoeant play hockey if this is the case why does he not object to the road taxes when he knows for sure thore are some roads which he never travels on however my object here not to cast aspersions on the councils head and i must in all fairness point out that last year the council offered a ban quet md trophies to the champ lonship winners the peewee and the midget hockey teams but how many banquets and how many trophies can a player withstand when the hockey representatives declined the of ter and asked for monetary as sistance instead tempers flared and the outcome is still only divulged to the in group in conclusion on behalf of mr norton and on behalf of the group which was pleased to read the article in last weeks herald but was too apathetic to voice an opinfon i ask you the the council and you mr mav or to find this money some where and to make provision for it in future years and if this letter does not convince you that you must remedy this situation perhaps others who feel as i do will overcome their apathy and make use of the mailbag to voice their op inions i remain respectfully yours d hacbmann th1 gioronown hiralo thursday march 54 1h4 page 3 on
