the georgetown gardener ball in af ad planting calendar by cordon lindsay smith ilanting calendar most flowers and vegetables fall in i to three main planting groups technically these are known and usually listed in the seed cata logne as hardy semihar dy and tender la the first planting groups are such things ms sweet peas cos mos alyssum poppy and a host of others these wont mind a lilt of frost especially while in the early stages of germination land growth and they actually 1 prefer to get started in the cool weather among the vegetables in this group are peas lettuce spinach and onion sets just as soon as the soil is fit to work it is safe to sow any of the hardy kinds indeed in ome of the warmer parts of the country some of these could be planted in the fall and the seeds allowed to lie dormant r the winter though there is not much to be gained by his practise in most of canada another early bird is grass seed one can hardly sow grass i too early some experts even spiikle it on the last snow and let it sink in in making hew lawns of course one must wait until the soil is dry enough tor thorough working without lucking but one can make re- pain to bare spots in establish ad lawns by raking seed in very fighuy in april nursery stock also should be planted early so that it can get started before the sun gets hot the semi hardy sorts such as r petunias asters and so on should not be planted or set out until practically all danger of frost is over as for the rea lly tender things such as impat lence begomas peppers tomat oes or melons these will not stand any frost at all and in most of canada will require pro tection if planted before may 24 actually too here is little gain in planting these until the soil is warm appoint frank morette works staff
