psychiatrist advice auxiliary class candidates the method by which some georgetown public school pup ils are judged to be candidates for the auxiliary classes for slow learners isnt what it should be according to public school trustee harry snorflu at a board meeting wednes day night hay 4 at harrison public school mr shortfll con tended that none of- the mem bers of the selection panel the area inspector o g mcdowell halton medical officer of health dr archie bull and th prlndpals of the schools in which the classes are held are qualified to rule on the pupils abilities to learn selection should be by a qua lified psychiatrist mr short- ill said he told his feuow-trut- teea that the board should be looking into the possibility of having a psychiatrist or psychoh oglst rule on the youngsters capehllities before they aretolao ed in the auxiliary classes mr shortm made the sugges tion after he learned that only a very small per centage of pup ils placed in auxiliary classes ever return to the regular class room he said the board was led to believe that the child ren entering the classes would receive corrective measures some trustees said they felt the cost of having a psycholog ist assess the qualifications of the young candidates might e it prohibitive however they agreed to confer with a qualified specialist to find it such a plan would be feasible inspector os mcdowell who was present at the meeting said he would be happy to see tha board insulnte the plan if they found it was workable he said he knew of no other school sys tem the sua of georgetown cur rently boasting a psychiatrist on us selection board probably because of the expense the georgetown public school system includes two auxiliary classes a junior class vrlt is pupils and i senior class
