become an ontario i wary of life cottagjna by mrs j niavwhof 25 mcgilvray cresc ukesituatedin th juro i like of bays district near i baysvule gave us our first taste vthe papular hot weather 1 pastime known as cotuging i we were not even at our des- i thution m fact just nicely on r way when we began to dis cover the many things we for i aot to load in the car how vm told mental lapses during packing afflicts even the experienced in vacation i pjapantlons we put our own fegetf nines down to the enor- heat we left behind i were in such a hurry to escape 1 to the holiday country we just i roshed our packing and left for the unknown lying in wait when we arrived at our 1 hotneaway from home it all 1 so nice and peaceful we had yet to be greeted by i tile mosquitoes and black flies i lying in wait for us one day after our arrival we looked like we had the chickenpox and at small store where we got some food everyone including 1 ourselves looked like monkeys with everyone doing the leratchlng bit insect repellent was sold out i in no time the owner of our 1 cottoge told us that the in i sects were late because of the 1 late spring he promised i try to get rid of them and us- 1 ed some sort of gun with kfumg gas which laid a mist around the shoreline and in deed it helped mere relaxed i found that when you are at a cottage you tend to be i more relaxed our transistor i radio did not pick up too many i stations until after dark i ion peter played his records i of the boiling stones and others i day after day until we learned to enjoy his kind of music tioar takes off too before we left for the cot i tage we had instructed a neigh i hour s son ashley m taking i ore of tiger our cat during i the day he is always in the j house and at night he is out i aide of coursewhen it came 1 time to leave tiger was not to be found lie must have out but we could nof i wait probably the neatly laid i plans for his care wouldnt i have worked out anyway tourists church going to church in a smalt i tourist place is impressive i oars was a very small church and to have a seat one had to half hour ahead of i time there were just as many i people attending the service 1 outside standing near the open windows as there were inside cottage nights sleeping in a summer cot i tage is ideal except when the i nights turn very cold i course one of the things we i left at home was an extra blan- ifcet and it is missed to much more when you forget to light the oil stove before going wild life the fishing was very good we caught mostly perch and bass and enjoyed their flavour very much and the fncndli ness of the wild animals in the cottage country was anoth where eagerly tucked away in their cheeks whatever food scraps they could find and woodpeckers periodically broke the stillness with their machine gun rattle as they worked for their meals picturesque our surroundings abounded with picturesque spots which make good subjects for anyone with some artistic merit my husband jack sketched various cottages and some other pleas ant settings we did not miss the tele phone at all nobody could reach us and knowing this add ed to the relaxed atmosphere water haiards being chairman of the geor gekmn water safety committee of the red cross i was very aware of water safety or rather the lack of it moms and dads ohen shunheffisctves- in therr cottages while their small chil dren played alone near deep water with no life jackets and no supervision large families piled into their boats and shot off across the lake without life preservers there was no hot water and no inside facilities but we got used to the new way of living very fast all in all we discovered at the end of our stay that wc d been bitten by the cottage bug that s the bite that lasts long after the black fly and mos qulto bites have disappeared many georgetown dog own- afaould have en who felt confident that once a year their pet will not contract dis temper this luromer because it was vaccinated as a pup may find themselves with a very sick animal a their hinds one of these mornings the highly contagious dis ease which kills off a number of georgetown dogs every year is one of the most contagious of dog illnesses and fs partlc ulirly prominent during the suirtmer months because it i when the towns dog popula tion is on the move but what many dog 4wners don t realize is that the firs distemper vaccination permanent the distemper shot should be given yearly but may give protection for long as two years said georgetown veter inanan robert gaskin when asked about the incidence of distemper here the revacclnation 4 the big factor in keeping the disease in check he said in fact the past 7 or 8 years there have been some very effective vac cines developed and the public for the most part have become aware and taken advantage of these he said he has been stressing the revacclnation factor to dog owners when they bring the pet for the first shot the distemper virus is air borne making it a constan threat to canines but tempera ture changes are most conduct ivs to the spread of the virus sometimes the preliminary stages of distemper are so mild it takes a veterinarian to de tect them other times the di sease is ushered in with vio lent convulsions the affected dog shows signs of discharge from the nose and eyes diarrh oea and pneumonia there is little hope of sav ing the dog if the disease res ches the secondary stage marked by chomping fits and foaming at the mouth even if save the animal perman dam booster shot tni oiororrowh hirald thursday july 21th 19i6
