georgetown herald pubhahwl y hoow nmfliptn umltad 23 main strut s georgetown ontario w c iiihn publisher thursday july 28th 1966 editorial comment s downtown on the move creation of a huge paved parking area behind a block of ma n street and mill street stores is a maor factor in the gradual rev tal zat on of georgetown s downtown shopping area the lend has been used fortome time for public park ng but despite a few improvements it left much to be des red sale of a property at the north end recently gave impetus to the parking authority to proceed with plans a new entrance has been added from main st surfacing com pleted and later park ng strips w ii ba pa nted on to g ve the maximum usage this is the f rst of what is hoped w ii ba park ng areas beh nd all the downtown blocks and is a forward step in keep ng pace with modern x mes the advent of ahopp ng plazas which prov ded the r own free park ng was some what of a blow to the old establ shed area which had done business in the same way for general ons there was some nitia hard feeling and i ttle rapport between the older and newer merchandisers when parking was first talked about downtown plaza people r ghtly were ind gnant that they should provide park ng at their own expense while the downtowners expected it to be prov ded by the public treasury now a happy solut on has been found the money will come from downtown park- ng meter revenue so in affect those who shop m the stores will be pying the park ing b ii merchants for the most pert have re covered from thatr initial reaction and there is a much friendlier feeling now the downtowners have come to realize that there is going to brfernpetition and bet ter that it be in georgetown than with some other community a trading area of over fifteen thousand people can certainly support additional stores and there is now a healthy rivalry among the rwns thn maor shopping centres there is one factor which is some times overlooked even if a bit of public money is spent downtown there t large tax revenue from commercial build ings which in effect helps to subsidize residential faxes a prosperous merchant commun ty therefore while of direct bene- frt to the participants indirectly benefits every householder by helping stabilize his taxes we look forward to a gradual crease in both downtown and plaza areas as georgetown grows for it is a well known fact that the more good stores in a town the more people stay home to shop and ihe more people come here to do their buying from the surrounding areas toe cataaarae tirol 0tc r laughed 4jfc se such
