ifmmlimmemm our year old y a lusty infant 1 20 of all ages in me a flmnrmmtnmwt knit tumttm wuul fnwiniii a ttn anama itmrtaln mftgt bm lftv awtibt nmfaetb havfl and all lndmritul dulull hi i- the g and district ymcaywca u now four yean old the tact that over uqo men wonton teenagers and chudren are pattcipatjb in y adlvtuea in this commu nity la uvlnj proof that this is a lusty infant indeed despite this evidence however it is re- rotable that very often the popular image of the y is that of groups of children and young men racing about aarmnasluin- the truth la that this la only one an import ant one but only one of the areas of ymyw activity and concern the whole picture is far more than this by their very nature the growth development and goals of the y organization parallel those 0 any progres sive community in the towns and cities of today the chief growth indicators are assess ment dollars numbers of in dustries and degree of geog raphic spread in behind these statistics however there is al ways the more basic element of the development of the peo ple for indeed people are the most important ingredient in any local growth or progress and their intellectual cultural and spiritual growth is the real indicator for any measure ment of progress basic community goals are always governed by the need for healthy people skilled peop le and spiritually sound peop le the whole purpose and reason for the being of the young mens and young wo mens christian association is centred around the develop ment of these basic community needs in the accomplishment of these goals the y utilizes two different approaches first of course there is the development of the individual participant in the gymnasiums there is the development of acrobatic skills with the ac companying results of sound and sturdy bodies and active minds in the handicapped club skills and fellowship grow at the same time in the slim- urse trim figures good grooming and fun hand in hand knowledge of current topics and good coffee are absorbed together in the ladies-take- a break group and so it goes through the many y activities secondly there is the train ing of a leadership team gain ed through the actual experi ence of organising planning and directing the activities of is or more y groupi as these leaders mature in their judge ments improve in their under standing of people and devel op a sense of both personal and community responsibility they are preparing themselves not only for y service but also for wider community service these people are helping oth ers as they are helping them selves this is a sort of do-it- yourself program that has been a mark of y philosophy ince its inception more than 120 years ago the success this work however depends on a continuing flow of volunteers and members from the area that the y is attempting to serve the y organization is not topheavy with professional organizers and programmers it depends on the willingness local citizens io help themselves by helping ot2rs in georgetown and district the y is committed to serving the needs of a growing commu nity it is natural therefore that the demands upon y mem bers and y funds must also in- crease in order to meet the needs of service and of growth the ymcaywca is planning to appeal to all local citizens to help us help during the period of oct 18 grams certain programs are then there is the most criti cal need that of money it is the shortage of this commo dity that is crippling and rend ering ineffective the works of many worthwhile organizations the ymyw is no exception the y is seeking local co operation in three areas there is a need for time for skills and for money the offering of any of these com modities will be an investment in the development of this community many eseajaftnt projects have and all individual dtisena the objective wilt be sitting dormant because there have been cnrtaued and others is no time to give to them vol ive just not been assorted be unteerad toie will develop tbem for the use of our citiz ens the gift of abiltras ii also being sought who would like to write who can draw a poster who has the ability to generate enthusiasm who knows something about square- dancing the ymyw needs these skills and any others that are available cause of the lack of the y looks for assistance in meeting money neada in two waya first the y loots for more members y membership rates are very nominal and set up to cover families individuals and age groups because the rates are nominal a very amall part of the y budget is pro vided in this way secondly the y is seeking public support by donation since- the many services lb be provided will benefit the whole community the ap peal will be made to all indust ries commercial enterprises 97m if this u met the y w0 be able to maintain its present sjarvicea this budget provides no funds for increataed eervleee oyer the last 130 years the blue triangle of the ywca and the red triangle of the ymca have come to be a world wide symbol of the beat efforts in the development of a clean mind sound body and a christ ian spirit the citisena of ge orgetown and district have an opportunity to share in this de velopment because w bavo a y hftreto support the y is to make ah investment in the highest goals of this communi ty to insure that we are pro gressing physically halt- on and pee in a letter to the board read at its meeting last week kerr said the only person who can explain the delay is mr william davis education minister semi troubu but mr kerr added 1 sus pect that possibly there has been some trouble in obtain ing the necessary nominees i am still confident that the in stitution will be operating in the fall of 1967 so as to provide at least some halton county i did say that a college or applied arts and technology would be established in the haltonpeel area a wo year course in a variety of subjects leading to a diploma and also enabling students to carry on and further their education at the university if they so wish he went on the minister of education asked me some- months ago to submit four names to him for consideration on the initial board of govern ors and this i have done as you may know the board wilt be made up of 12 people four from halton four from peel and two each to be named by the respective coun ty councils mr kerrs letter was receiv ed without discussion mr davis has said that there would be an announcement this month i thf grand faupenne sports coui exemplifies lh new elegance in tyiirta achieved
