little theatre president chris fisher and mrs fisher guests t the meeting and owen sound little theatre president mac gollert lets play bridge lllllllllllll by bill coats iiiihii ittrrr this week we continue with a discussion of conventions i can give only the briefest out line in my column all of these conventions and a few others as well are covered in the ser jes of lessons that i will be gl ving starting october 12th i would like to talk about the stayman or two club conven tion but before i do we bad better have a look at respon aes to no trump bids if your partner opens the bid ding with one no trump a bid of a suit at the two level is a weak bid now most bridge players who don t play dupli cate or haven t played outside their own group don t realize this the players think that they are playing gorcn or cuth bertson but they are not both of these great bridge authorities recommend the weak two response to an open ing bid of one no trump such a response is a rescue bid designed to get the part nership out of a poor no trump contract into a suit contract at low level this two level res ponse should be made only if you have less than six points and a five card or longer suit the opening bidder is suppos ed to pass any suit response at the two level what do you do if you have a good five or six card suit preferably a major and eight points or more you bid your suit at the three level the dif ficulty arises when you have four card major and eight or more points you cannot show it t the two level and it s real ly not enough sutt to bid at the three level this is where the stayman convention finds its ise it txk ea the two dub over one trump and changes its meaning in stead of showing a long club ait and a weafcisb hand the two club bid aitta the opener if be has a four card major bea ded by at least one honour this two club bid must be answered and the answers s follows two diamonds no four card major two hearts a four card heart suit but not a four card spade suit two spades a four card spade suit and maybe a four card heart suit as well usually the opening no trump bidden will not have two four card majors but in case he has ha bids the spade first the stayman convention can be extended to cover opening bids of two and three no trump the bidding south west in each case bids of three or four clubs respectively are stayman here is a hand with stayman 1 action north s kq65 h q 9 8 3 d 62 c k 9 4 west si 9 h a 7 d a j 9 8 4 c 8 7 3 2 east s 8 4 3 2 h 10 4 2 d q 10 3 ci 10 5 south s a 10 7 h k j 6 5 d k 7 5 c a q 6 1 nt 2 h pass pass north east 2 c pass 4 h all pass there are two things to notice here one is thai although northsouth have 27 po nts a three no trump contract will be defeated by a diamond lead the second is that left to his own devices north would prob ably bid spades not hearts and the four heart suit wojld be lost if south responds two diamonds to the stayman two club bid then north will sun ply bid three no trump the stayman convention has gained world wide acclaim and is used by nearly all good bridge player 1st pair cam sin la r tom warnes 2nd pair betty ashley penny bnstow 3rd pa r duke wilson hike
