georgetown herald pubhshod by hen new ope unuaaal 22 main street s georgetown ontario w t ww ftamnfca thursday february 9fh 1947 editorial comment hard chore for councillors continual pressure for mora money to operate local boards and commissions mounting costs bf materials and salaries demands from residents for more ervici and an inflationary spiral which causes some ratepayers to resent the fact that tax es dont go up make it a difficult fob for municipal councils these days to conduct business to be sure one would not want to live in a town where there was no pro gress where only the barest of wrvlea were provided where saving a dollar was the endall in town financing but neither should one wish to live in a community where councillors gave no sec ond thoughts to requests for money and lat taxes go up and up with no concern other than to satisfy every demand of every citi zen a town after all is just a collection of individuals and the tax treasury can only be the total of what we spend for collective improvements if we spend more than we can afford we can be in trouble just as can an individ ual who tries to spend each year more than he earns the difficulty in municipal budgeting is a dedicated religion today when it is ell too common for antireligious views to be given prominence we must not lose track of the fact that god and religion still play a prominent part in the life of many people one such group is the christian re formed church which friday will dedicate ft fine new church building on the 7th line at a special service preceding commence ment of regular services on sunday the church whose membership his grown operation icicle when people are prone to criticize if things are not just to therr hking wa can point out one incident this week where three public utilities combined to do the public a favour the east side of main street where the herald building is located li a danger spot when certain weathar conditions cause huge icicles to form overhanging theaifiewalk from sloping roofs monday morning ths icicles had rea ched such epic proportions that if one had that one must keep in mind the wide var iation fri incomes of residents and the ba sis of taxation which is property rather than income there is tone school bf thought which woud have municipal taxes raised on an income basis and it has many points in its favour but ae long as property is the criterion then caution must be used in raising taxes keeping in mind particularly those resi dents who live oft fixed incomes as we mentioned last week one major factor which must be curtailed is the pas sive submission of school boards to outrag eous demands for more and more money by the teaching profession residents too must think twice before complaining too much about roads sidewalks water defic iencies snow plowing we cannot demand perfection on a townwide scale any more than we can in our private lives no one has his home perfectly outfit- led his family perfectly clothed takes air the trips he wants drives the car of his dreams what most men do is to make their wage stretch as far as it can providing first the necessities then some saving for rainy day and last what luxuries he can afford can a town be any different from 30 families a decade ago to 142 fam ilies today has not only outfitted one struc ture kv hs short georgetown existence but tts outgrown this building and erected a fine new edifice a majority of the congregation are new canadians of dutch extraction and it is a tribute to their religion that starting in a new land with limited finances they are witling to give generously t their church with all the demands on their pocketbook of everyday riving fallen on a pedestrian a serious injury could have occurred to the rescue came operation icicle while the public works department blocked off traffic on the street and the pokce department stood by to direct traf fic the hydr used their truck and bucket to swing hydromen toward the eavas and knock down the pesky icicles merchants were happy for the service for it u welt nigh impossible to do this themselves and the public owes a vote of thanks for elimination of this danger winters sports in the mail ba says 47000 fire aerial ladder should be vetoed 72 duncan drive february 2nd 1967 your issue of february 2nd 1967 carries some ot the re- 1 marks that i made before coun cil at the meeting of january 30th refircttably it joes not quote mc deeply enough for the genuine meaning and con cern i expressed does not show through i do not pretend to support all or any request to council and my prime worry here was not the library is sue i stated and i relterat that statement that as a cost cut ting battle the mayor has chosen an unfortunate battle field wc have excellent schools a fine quality ot tea- chprs moat of whom are dedi cated to giving our youth a fair start wc have built good bull dings at great cast but tbt child must have facilities for study beyond the school text for without them he learns no depth to his subject books are the fund ot knowledge for thll and at the requested 2 a head represent a fine bargain the mayor must know that there are those who cannot afford to bay the books themselves and a properly stocked and staffed library gives everyone with the desire an equal chance ah this aside however the report missed one particularly disquieting point some two or three weeks ago the council lor in charge ot the police and lire committee covertly stated tint- his cemmjsatott wouitf- irinj in a recommendation to purchase ah aerial fire truck for high apartment bolwasi at a cost of 400tx this was made briefly bat dearly the mayor did bet stand up and ridicule this uutft was not re ported in the press afaln on monday when addresslnc coun cil on cost cutting i stated that where we need library faculties and where these are tanned ridiculous we certainly can save this 47000 fprnon-exlst- ent high rise spartmentstwwch was frankly the mostoutland ish sunestlon i have heard councillor harrison said that such a ladder and truck was useful for fighting fires on roofs of factories agaiav as re port of this in the press obvi ously the purchase is under some sort of conatderauen yet the taxpayer has heard nothing ot it why id the same issue ef the herald we arc told that the lowest tender for the new pol- lee building was 19500 is this department becoming a little top heavy for a town of less than 12000 we have a chief an inspector a sergeant st least 2 corporals newlyap pointed several constables and a cadet if i am tot mistaken now a new bttildlligt what for a desk for everyone or mora efficiency in the words of mayor gibbons ftmfcutotis not ana ef these eflkers or man were on education in this country last weak i com plained about obsolescence the lack of everything but pu pils the unfairness of the fund- raising for education the lack of any national standards and the violently others threatened to cancel their sub scriptions soma said 1 was vul gar and one reverend gentle man even offered to thrash me within sn inch of my life i re minded him that my big broth er from members urging that i be drummed out of the service be cause i wss destroying the teachers image by mentioning here such human horrors as sex and drink and by using the odd epithet he saked me record of merit by an inspec tor who sees him maybe once a year for one or two lessons harley to halt0n weekly observations by dr harry hariey mp for hahon the house of commons has psssed the transportation bill and is now debating integ ration of the armed forces in canada it has been pointed out that canada has three main functions for her armed forces 1 united nations peace keep ing forces z all deterrent of war by contributions of armed forc es to na1x snd norad r 3 and to maintain the defenc es of canada itself rather than concentrate on any one of these matters the government has decided combine all three in this way we protect our own country as well as make a canadian con tribution to our international responsibilities in preserving peace and deterring the possib ility of war to try to have three sep arate forces do this would be very expensive what is hoped for unification is to provide a flexible armed services that can do all these functions with three services there hsve been occasions in the past when one service procured equipment without any consideration to the needsandjcquirements of the other services there are many areas where duplications in the three services are totally un- necesssary and exorbitantly ex pensive examples are dis tinct and different uniforms separate personnel policies common basic training dup lication of communications medical and dental services hsve been provided as an integ rated service for some time the best man for every position should be chosen whether he is army navy or air force com- bst units will retain their id entity and their specialised training and functions land sea snd air units each with its own specially trained personnel will be retained as long as there is a requirement for them it hss been pointed out that significant savings in cost have already been made despite increased costs of mat erials supplies and service generally from 196445 to 1986 1966 there has been a net sa ing in that year of 12 million dollars the debate continues in alia house hornby congratulations to jean asarlr heer on her recent marriage birthday greetings to janet hill on february 2nd to tanya demlng on
