t little theatre players to play four shows at poor alex hoknty by ann currl on the whole a little of whit you fancy was fancied more than a little by dr ber nera jackson at last week s ad judication of the little thea tres western ontario drama festival entry an enjoyable evening with k production which should de velop as it goes along was his final comment dr jackson la a professor of english at mcmaster university and part time drama critic for the ham uton spectator dr jackson pointed out that it was his duty to be hypercri ileal and to find small weak nesses normally overlooked with such a setting and such i pronounced accents the cast had a large obstacle to over come since this is the setting and accent of so many english music hall scenes it becomes he praised the authors flair for comedy both in dialogue and in character creation but felt it was too slow moving m the beginning the direction on the whole was firm with affective placing said the ad jodicator but stated some of the stage action between the two women bosle and daisy itemed artificial beferring to the pronounced cockney accents throughout the play dr jackson remarked lliat the accents were well main tained and the cockney vig our most natural he suggested too many sentences began with ere he praised the sets designed by liz brown and the lighting by tom massena the costumes he also felt were just right tasteless and garish due to lack of modulation nd emphasis some of the lines were lost claimed the adjudica tor particularly at home was knocker eric ming stated dr jackson he was very plausible and looked the part he urged him to try and impress him elf more on the audience he praised charlieboy ron hunt highly saying he was excellent even to body gestures and movements tirih jack ferguson his otce was good and pike chris fisher for his effective portrayal of an old man ffia jiggly stance whi key voice and constant whin ing made tlhe perfect skid row type he warned him however of- overdoing mannerisms the others he criticised to aoane extent but generally prai ced rosie played by kathleen bplcer he called a promising actress who dropped her voice a little too much he suggested daisy very miodonald an dbviously expe rienced actress capable of doing a good job was miscast in this role the extras did a good job ac cording to the adjudicator they included dea nichols who play led two roles opposite in char acter ratface the sinister crook and the detective custo- mers fred phillips jim run- die and gord hunt mobsters tom masiena will mccluskey and jerry cunningham and the voice of the bbc peter mac- donald your reporter enjoyed the whole show despite an admit i ted jarring on the ears by the continued broad cockney ac cent the choice of this partic- ular play set in an english pub and peopled by some ter ribly english characters seem ed unfortunate for a canadian centennial festival but did not detract from the play itself it fulfilled its function which is to entertain
