birthday to alice mael armstrong who will celebrate her seventh birthday on thurs- day may llth in the mail bag rr 1 georgetown 29 april 1967 dear sir as tho new residential devel opment in the east end of town takes form h cannot be over looked that in one section electric wiring is buried while in another in the true fashion of the pioneering days wooden poles for overhead wir ing have been erected is expected that h those streets where the wiring has been buried houses are heated electrically and that it is the policy of the hydro to reward the owner of an all electric home by putting utility wires underground apparently then an act of revenge for lost bus iness the same hydro will use the ugly and outdated method of overhead wiring where the builders or owners dare to use another than electric source of energy for heating thus brings to mind person al experience- where the ontar- hydro made every effort sell an electric heating system and offered as inducement put a considerable length of wmng underground free of charge if however electric heat was not chosen the bury ing of the wire could be had only at tremendous cost this ean mean only one of two things either that supply ing electric energy for house- heating is a very lucrative bus iness so much to that the hy dro can afford to forgo the charge for the immensely costly job of wire burying or that the wire burying is not really costly at all and the charge for it is grossly inflated why the hydro a publicly owned corporation whose inter est should be or so one thinks to contribute to the attracti enesa of the community which it serves should insist to put a lot of creosoted poles in a street from which the bet ter to dangle wires is difficult to understand unless of course the property owners have knuc kjed under and agreed to buy electricity for heating some time ago when in tor onto an effort was made to wards more balanced street architecture the hydro explain ed the difficulty of burying el ectric wiring particularly the need for heavier insulation and the necessity of above ground connection boxes in regular in tervals one ts tempted to refer our elecbelty experts to those countries where wiring has al ways been placed underground practically since the advent of the use of electricity and cert ainly long before the invention of the most effective insulation materials and where boxes were needed they were placed 3 above the ground which scar cely can be more difficult than to bang them 20 up on a pole in the case of the george town east development it would bo interesting to learn of attitude of our hydro commis sioners surely the overhead poles do not strike them as be ing pretty it appears that chance for feeautification j residential district was passed up yours truly
