georgetown herald pubfohwl by horn newspapers limited 22 main streat south georgetown ontario w c iihn publisher thursday may 18th 1967 editorial comment industry favours small towns from the acton free press the ontario economic counal reporti ontario manufacturers who have located outside the large cities m the smaller mun icipalities are satisfied and would do it again if the situation were identical forty- one companies were interviewed and they gave diverse reasons for the moves site selection is influenced by a variety of personal and corporate considerations including adacency to recreation areas and absence of traffic jams but there were bar riers to successful operation chief among these seemed to be the lack of rental hous ing high rents and a labor shortage one of the companies interviewed said their fnal location was chosen because of better than average social educational and recreational environment this is a barb in the direction of people in this and other communities who oppose improvements in these areas lets be canadian from the guelph daily mercury believe it or not there are communities who would lust at soon forget about in dustrint development and remain quiet hav ens for the ratlred one of these accord ing to its mayor is goderich despondent over the toss of potential industry and the lack of support for the in dustrial commission he told the people of goderich he felt the malonty of them did not favor industrial development in the town the goderich signal star said it is difficult to dismiss the idea there is a large body of opinion there which wants goder ith to remain a small country town prettiest in ontario these are opinions this writer has heard expressed in acton too but never by a municipal official in an official capacity how many towns are there in ontario with simtlwr large bodies of opinion against industrialization we are inclined to go along with that sault ste mane aiderman stan fisher who wants city council to discourage the flying of the stars and stripes by storekeepers it is done by the merchant to make american visitors feel at home which is probably ust what visitors do not want to feel it is easy to believe americans would rather see can adian flags on display if only to enoy the slightly giddy feeling that comes over most people when they enter a foreign country why cant canadians be canadian flying american flags all over the place is like offering american visitors southern fried chicken mr fisher scores a point when he sug gesrs that canadians will find very few cases of their flag being flown in the um ted states indeed they will not americans an not that silly man and his world sugar and spice by bill smiley smiley goes fishin no man stands alone from the oakville journal record a convenient thought of many people particularly those who have achieved that they are able to live alone triumphant some measure of economic security is intejjeir accomplishments comfortable in thev isolation there are those who still believe their personal rugged individualism is the only basis for success despite the historical fact of two world wars and contin uing mternational conflicts which have and re maintaining the freedom to be indivi dual whether one supports or opposes the details of the conduct of a conflict like viet nam he should remember some of the free worlds citizens are dying for the cause of others who are busy making their single- handed way in the world the vietnam war casualties in ust one recent week reached the record of 274 americans killed 1 320 wounded and 12 missing the total united states dead alone in the vietnam war exceeds 8000 these statistics help show that man does not live alone that others still are sacrificing supremely for those who are en 0ing their successful lives thus instead of crowing of ones own greatness those who are not directly involved in conflicts to preserve freedom should be directing at least some of their thoughts into the path ways of compassion gratitude and concern for fellowman ralph waldo emmerson the 19th cen fury poet and essayist once paraphrased a biblical quotation which is to a great degree appropos to today man does not trve by bread alone but by faith by admiration and by sympathy about cars before you buy read our booklet how to save monet and avoid trouble in buying your new car ask both of ou a good supply of hooks maps with sure fire holes marked in red and an infallible sense of dir cction in tho bush that exactly what i lined up this rar mind you those keen upts take a bit of mana gin hiej re great in the bush but they need an organii alional mind to channel their energits i had to get quite firm with him when he began muttering about 4 am and hitting tho atrcam at dawn dawn indeed 1 told him that 1 pur superstition only the very young immature an gler goes floundering off in tho dark fishes life a fool un til noon then it whacked for the day just about then the wily mature angler fortified with a good breakfast arrive and slaughters the trout which are completely unpre pared for the second wave the experts vt clt we got au ay about 10 30 after a coupk of false starts he forgot his lunch and we had to go around to his place and when wo got out to the count line 1 realized thit becnusc of his ttupidity id been upset and had forgotten m waders but he ha i a bciuliful spot picked out you park the car just off the road and walk up this hdro line to the stream the stream w is just in there past tin tourth hjdro tower he thought it wis just past the 14th and the re 100 yanfes apart not another angler in sight i gloated we cached the lunch and began working up the stream i like that word we angcrs use warning you couldn t hire a mm to do it for s80 an hour slash in tho face from an aider hole in the boot from a snag slide from a log and ohohoh a jou hit that sprint ted water lose a boot in the mud scratch hands to a blood mess on jagged branches but us all worth it if the trout are hitin they were biting chch other on the neck i nibbling each others cars and snapping each other in half as far as i know but they were not biting worms after an hour ol torture that would hae made the gestapo grcon with envy we arrived at tho big pool above trie beaver dam tho surcflro hole we fished hard a big trial lard hen popped into the pond secure in the knowledge that it wesn t duck season looked v over crackled with laughtei and took off we fished harder a baby beaver surfaced swam casually to within four feet looked at each of us and expressed his feelings by turning his rump in the air and submerging we fished dcsparatcly sud denly there was a huge splosh then a kerplunk kerplunk and a big buck dcor splashed through tho shallows and away sneering over his shoulder that did it we left but there was no point said my mate in taking the long tortu ous trail back down tho stream through that heavy blash so with his infallible eense of dir ectlon we swung around in a circle by the high ground the high ground turned out to be cedar based in mud both so thick you had to crawl most or the time the circle turned out to be the two long sides of an isosceles triangle two hours later we hit the hydro road right on the nose except that the nose had moved about a mile due east my first trout trip of the season and believe mo i don t care if mrs richard bur ton wants to go along next time it s my last there have to be easier ways to get a cor onary kerrs column mpp report to georgetown from queens park last friday i had the priv liege ol the school at milton is res i idential and includes a 32 bel hospital two gymnasiums and an indoor swimming pool i at the official opening the honourable ray conncll min ister of public works informed us that the installation cost ov er eleven million dollars and was the most modern having themost upto date equipment and techniques of any such institution in north america a visit to the school to see the children in their classrooms in the halls and at play cant help but restore ones faith in human nature and our society in the legislature fast week the honourable william davis minister of education an nounced an extension of the be nefits of the now capital grants plan to all capital pro ects dealing with elementary and secondary school construc tion in the province mr davis mentioned that school boards have enthusiastically endorsed the new plan whereby the government has absorbed a big- ger proportion of the capital costs of new schools tho main idea is to encourage boards to build central schools to replace older smaller schools this de velopment has gone a long way towards providing a quality oe educational opportunity for stu dents in many areas where for merly it was not possible to do so larger units will not only provide better facilities but will substantially reduce tho cost to be borne at the local level the cost of these revis ions will increase the govern ments grants to local boards in 1967 by an amount estim ated at six million dollars and reduce the obligation of local boards by a corresponding am ount this is a further step in the continuing process of the province assuming more of tho costs of education in ontario did you know some 1400 hospitals serve canadnns throughout the nat- i ion cimda s first hospital j the hotel dieu w is built
