indeed a long way back to february 1926 when the canadian legion was formed in the marlborough hotel in winnipeg only three years ago the centennial campaign wag formed which got in progress in earnest in the year 1966 the stent of this fund was to be one million dollars to be put in a trust fund this was to be raised by the legions own membership and was to be used not for the present day but for the future generations and no that the great work of welfare and community work may still be going when the day comes that this great organization is no more as we all hope and pray that war may be no more to swell the ranks of ex service men and women the challenge of this great centennial fund was accepted and pleased to say it is over half way now surely this was a sreat example of our motto not for self but for others now for some of the grea work the legion has done and is doing and still increasing its endeavor to give greater service in the future it serves in ev cry field it can its program of track and field sports with its 180 coaches headed by one of the worlds finest geoffrey dy son it is giving comfort and thought for senior citizens by providing at very low rents very small branch of eighty five members at erin is now in the process of its second lot of ap artments for senior citizens the legion as a whole has over ten million dollars invested in the comfort and welfare of those who have given many years to this great country of ours what it is today we provide inspira tion for the young by sponsor ing 8 500 boy scouts and cubs we promote air and sea cadets in field and track events 75 000 oung people arc involved in all kinds of sporu opportuni ties for the mind and better ed ucation are provided for the citizens of tomorrow by the le gion s contribution of over 100 000 annually for scholarships i and bursaries this money is raised by the ladies auxiliaries i who do a wonderful job this program is designed to help both the scholar and the nation i in the category of help for the sick legionnaires of two prov incu raised over 300 000 a year for polio victims in the past they also sponsor blood clinics and even operate schools for retarded children in some places one of out branches in the district port credit legion has given 5 000 to south peel hospital georgetown 10 000 to its hospital and the same goes for other branches the legion also serves as a strong national voice in mat tera regarding veterans lcgisla hon and ges freely to any ex service personnel widows or orphans through its service bureau which helps 30 000 pers ons yearly with their problems over vi million dollars a year goes to help welfare cases great part of this is raised through the publics generous donations and the sale of pop pies of remembrance which is used whenever and whorevei the need arises below is a breakdown made of 75 of the royal canadian le gion in ontario showing wlm they spent to help other sports 159 jbo scouts guides and cadets 45 584 branch scholarships 22 450 public speaking 18 500 donations to others 183204 so with this achievement the legion is ox emplifying the golden rule in its day to day operations in their own community showing a great interest in the well be ing of our youth in whose hands the future of canada lies and in the welfare of its people now let us get down to bus iness to carry on this great work we must bo strong a many of our older members of world war i are now passing on to the great bejond but their dreams and thoughts are atill with us so i appeal to all c aervicc men and women to get out and join the legion nearest you we need you and you need us to carry on this great work proud we are given this horlt age to preserve and hring to maturity and above all let us continue to ever strive foi peace and a better understand ing among all mankind in conclusion ask not what your country can do lor you but what you can do or it as a nation is only as strong as the
