georgetown herald 22 muki straw south gaorgtovm ontario wci rage4 thursday september 14 1w7 editorial comment lots of hoopla quick to adopt most american cus toms canadians have never gone in for r the gimmicks and hoopla always associa ted with us political conventions last week the progressiveconserva tives did and caused more furor and got more television and press coverage than the last dozen elections all put together the convention had all the necessary ingredients a colourful leader fighting for his political future nine others from various sections of the dominion most of them wellknown and including two prov- z imal premiers a lady darkhorse to make it the first time a woman has sought such high office and a new declaration of party policy for a twoworld canada hotly op posed by a few roundy supported by ano ther few and politically accepted by a maj ority despite a slim chance of making the grade again as the national leader john drafenbaker succeeded in stealing the show right to the end he kept his plans a dose secret in a terrific speech thursday nails no good a simple treatment for elm trees in fested by duuh beetles was relayed to herald readers last year this was to drive galvanized nails around the trunk approx imately an inch apart the theory was that the nails would poison the sap eliminate the feeding beetles and save the tree from further damage ew 03 stree resident em hyde tried the reray which seemed to work but found that in any cd tree woundfap was weeping and kilmg the grass where it dropped he wroe the science department at the university of guelph for an opinion and has been informed that experimental on vnth the nails has found them to be use- ess for preventing dutch elm disease there are other preventative measures but they are very costly and not too long- lasting j neiv sidewalk needed with the season rapidly passing the stage when sidewalk repairs can still be made there ts one glaring spot which we hope the road committee can still consider the sdewalk from the old post office to the highway ts so pockmarked and un even that it constitutes a definite hazard to pedestrians particularly women in high heeled shoes and those pushing baby car riages on many occasions we have noticed women walk along the roadway rather than risk a broken ankle in negotiating this tor- he indicated ha might quit when he said he could not accept the leadership of a par ty espousing two separate nations in one canada friday morning he allowed his name to stand for nomination while say ing at the same time that this was only to allow him freedom of movement saturday with all the odds against him he itoad for office left the convention centra detected after the first ballots showed him trailing dismally then rallied to return and make a final speech which brought him a stand ing ovation despite his defeat who was it got at least an equal share of the press reports next day with new leader robert stanfield dief of course even hit bitterest enemies will miss him when as it must now happen he no lon ger continues in a major political role there were few who watched the dra ma who did not wish that with a perfect opportunity to bow out still on top to al ways feel in later years that he might have won he succumbed to that last temptation and saw his world tumble oops me we forgetting something while mr hydes hopes were buoyed by the fine appearance of his trees this year the university tells him this is prob ably due to the heavy rainfall this season the letter concludes if your trees are isolated from others they may escape the attention of the bark beetles and so escape the disease if the trees are still vig orous they are not as attractive to tha beet- ties if there are weak dying newly dead or stormdamaged branches that might at tract beetles for egg laying purposes such wood should be removed by an experien ced tree expert on some sites it may pay to water the trees during the dry part of tha summer and to apply commercial fer tilizer to maintain the trees in good vigour all prunlngs dead wood and fallen bran ches should be burned the district at a glance tukkjs route which replaces that hazard with the danger of be ng struck by an auto mobile last year the sidewalk around the old post office was replaced with a new sur face the same should be done immediately with the remainder
