in the mail bag dirt broken sidewalks is thisnewcomers impression apt 4 29 john st e september 28th w7 dew sir i would like to uke the i portunil to write and aay what georgetown looks like through the eyes of stranger i dme to live here a month ago o far all i ve seen is dirt du t broken beer bottles and paper over broken sidewalks also georgetown is very old fashioned a regards st albans in hertfordshire england being like georgetown as one of your readers says it is 1 do not ag ree because this town happens to be my home town i lived there before coming to this country st albans is a very old and ancient city but has always been a modern one and moved with the times it has never stood still even to in dustry it is a very clean and beautiful city with no broken sidewalks plenty of shows for all ages buses and trains run mng at all times of the da and night both to london and oth er atics th buses are all day running round town so 1 do not see as this town can be like st albans i do not think it would hurt the city fathers to spend a lit tie money on mndmg the side walks having a picture house in town for the younger folk o go to and throw in a few bu- round town because it s r t everyone who can spend 71k on a taxi aa a stranger it s about time georgetown woke up and be gan to build for new industry entertainment stores and mend the sidewalks yors truly mrs isabel finch disguested with freak show offered at fair stewarttown ontario september 28th 1967 dear sir i attended the annual geor getown fall fair on saturday and while on the midway i stopped to listen to a man broadcasting over a microphone bout a monster human being i bad never seen a freak aow before and being curious i paid a quarter to go m a tent and aee the socalled monster what i saw in that tent just boot made me sick there preserved in apothecary jars wert 16 human babies ranging from the first formation to s months i was shocked at such a sight and i felt it was immoral and absolutely disgusting maybe babies like this are used for scientific demonstra tion but to make a public dis play of them is just nauseating people who do such things have no decency or morals i wouldn t even classify them as human beings yours truly a disgusted observer margot wilha i s says downtown best theatre location 99 pennington cresc october 2nd 1967 dear mr editor i read in last week s herald that a couple of very respon aible people are interested in starting a movie theatre in the plaza i agree that georgetown is large enough to support a theatre but why the plaza in preference to downtown i live in the new area and the plaza is very convenient and offers very good services but even in a town the size of georgetown there to something about going downtown especially if ft ha something different to offer i have no objection to the plaza having a theatre but downtown should be the place to bav th fuvt theitrc i do not know if the down town businessmen have a com mittee or spokesman who ar pushing to gt the extras which a downtown should offer whal wilt happen to their future i they don t get these extra think what extra business the could get tf they are able to at tract all the new home buyer included the reported 1000 homf project buyeri to down town by having a theatre the area bounded by guclpb street water street mill street and main street u the focal point and should bs developed with a variety of businesses stores restaurants places of entertainment etc the busjn essmen should have a slogan tnayb downtown first first to havta h first in quality john m bew cet cable tv nice but whats the cost 54 pnncc charles dr 1 october 1967 u dear sir that was an interesting art cle you printed last week about how the noram construction is all set to spend 250 000 on i cable tv system for george town somewhat ambiguous was all the comment about george town s skylin of dangerous and unsightly hardware i take it the reference was to the water tower i agree dangerous and unsightly i ncv er drive past without wonder ing if it s going to fall on n n the uglv great the articl- left me in i state of considerable perturbat on because it left out the one thing that i want to know about cable tv sjstms namely how much is it going to cost us unable to bear the uncertain ty i worked it out and it fig ures ifke this noram is spending 250 000 say there are 2500 tellies in town that comes out to 5100 per set say we allow noram 10 years to amortize or whatever it is their investment that s 10 per set per year say we allow them 20 per cent for profit and up keep and one thing and anoth er that would be 12 per s t per j ear or 1 per set p r month doesn t seem too bad does if it s a lot of money certainly for one more channel than we get right now but if we and the government won t subsidize industry who will anyway noram might want to spread things over 25 years that would bring the ante down to 35c per month and like that daddy they can start in on mine tomorrow yours coaxiallv f ritchie complains ndp signs removed and abused 14 elizabeth street dear sir i have driven around town and have noticed some signs that the ndp have been put ting up on peoples own prop erty being abused by being re moved and put on fire hydrants and stop signs i m pretty sure this is not the work of children surely we are in an age where everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that prank sfers should stop their non sense when other people put in the work of putting their ndp signs up as requested 1 m quite sure the ndp workers do not go around removing other can didates signs thank you for the space i am yours truly lumbering skyward t wants big brother movement for town bo duncan drive september 21 1967 is there an organization inter ested in a worthwhile and re warding project surely with our population we can get a big brother movement going in georgetown this is a move ment that is desperately needed fatherless boys en this town an badly handicapped there 1 nothing for them when a boy loses his father for any reason his mother loses a bread win ner it is then a full time job raising and supporting the chil dren she is unable financially and energy wise to take the boy to the few projects in town for their age group a boy needs a man to talk to about things he is interested in that hn mo ther doesnt understand or know he has to know the man s role in life to find his own place someone to show him how to throw a football fix a bike flat these are some thini very small but vital to a younj boy one day or evening a week just a few hours out of 7 days to help a child is this loo much to ask of a man that is not his father if you did not know or think there is a need make a survey i know 5 families including my own personally who needs this help perhaps the herald will make a list of people who want to have help for their boys i will be glad to har from any woman who need this service yours tnilv mrs sewell
