down a little side street where the stone arti sans have their shops there we saw polished marble vases w bowls and watched the men working in that bitter cold ov er tiny gas burners we also liked very much the mashhad stone work a characteristic craft of that area the stone is grey and quite heavy rather uninteresting looking really but they create beautiful designs by cutting it into shapes then car ving out figures on it and paint ing the raised parts with black enamel paint very persian or at least they remind me of so much that i have seen of islamic art continued next wefk we went to see a turquoise factory just beyond the bazaar y there young boys were polish ing the stones on little hand- turned wheels the proprietor showed us all kinds of stones some clear robins egg blue and others less expensive ones ranging from blueveined to deep rich winter green we i- jv countjcs ked at lou of jewellery too but apri ha it was not so impressive as they use an inferior quality of gold that appears almost tinselly here in teheran you can imv study cost of region peel county has requested a study of the financial implica tions of regional government before it will take a stand on the chris read the herald in an indian hotel few was in force and there were truckloads of soldiers driving around but we were never real ly bothered except that heinz had to wait three days before he could finally get everything settled re his rifle and customs we had to go back to the bor der twice and wait and wait and then twice to the airport so we were getting rather disgus ted with it all actually the only excitement after the 400 curfew was driving around town explaining to all the soldiers that wciwerc tourists just come from the border and was there really a curfew once the rifle wsa sent we drove on to rawalpindi pesha war and baek throughsthe khy- ber to aihganistan the pas seemed more impressive from this side maybe less exciting tho than seeing it in an agr ani truck ive liked afghan istan more this time too im in kandahar again the wea ther has been freezing cold bti clear and bright the moun tains are dazzling with all the snow about we all ended up buying afghan coats because it was so cold after india i paid d00 afghanis about 12 for a sheepskin coat with bright blue embroidery and fur lining its warm and pretty and would cost much more any place clsc we found a very good hotel that was only 25 afghanis and now and again it was possible to get warm water there- none of us dared a full show cr except john and heinz be cause it must have been ten below zero outside we were invited to the home of and afghani carpet exporter for tea and cakes the first night we arrived he wasavcry nico man who has made a kind of hobby of collecting tourists last year he helped finance two german boys who wanted to ride from afghanistan to ger many on camels i dont know whether youve road about it in magazines falti and sheila and i wcro service karen and chris are seeing all the lights and fine shops may turn into a city girl after all about 3 more werks i exjkct and we j should be hack in iondin bye again j janice i teheran ivb in mfifl dear all now let nic think about what has happened since the last let ter first of all it was cold in mashhad just anund zero most of the time and windy nevertheless we did get around a hit as mashhad is a very inter- esting place a mediumsized t city with lots of hustle and bus tle as well as the ancient crafts and the best aspects of the muslim culture i told you that we were so glad to see all the lights and modern shop frnnti but even better was the bazaar a cluster of shops in the al leyways near the mosque the mosque is very holy as mashhad is the burial place of one of tho muslim prophets imam rczsh we could not enter tho mosque or go near he tombs of the prophets because wc are not muslim in fact we could he shot for daring to enter we met a spanish boy in afghanistan who told us that he got in be cause he looks iranian and hi copied all the actions of those around him kissing the steps moving forward on his knees etc but it was a dangerous thing to do still we could sec the dome of the mosque and he tiled mosaic of the arches were not going to say natural gas should tako all the credit for the delicious cookies biscuits and wafers baked on mccormicks londonontario premises producing
