of the siigb school board v in a town of 3500 in those days the iwpwspaper was closely linked with these iciytc bodies and mr harrison became one sf our closest business acquaintances after jtouncil meetings which were held in what js now the treasurers office in the munici- ial building we- usually walked home- to- jgether going over details of the meeting from our standpoints as employee and re- jjorter the building then was much smal ler than now the meeting place was also jrwr harrisons office heated by an old- v fashioned potbelly stove with extra steam provided on occasion by outspoken coun cil members who didnt always see eye to jtye on problems z we became associated with mr harri- j ion even more closely when we became a member of the public school board when hi attended meetings as treasurer when he retired as clerk in 1948 we continued our friendship as neighbours on charles st we always enjoyed a chat with hirw his intimate- knovvlege of the commu nity and its residents was often invalff- able when wis wanted to check some details of news when an old resident died it was always to him that we turned tmd details time as it must has takens toll in thirty forties when georgetown was so different z as we said civic administration was a woman affair perc harrison handling the clerical and monetary facets and bill mar shall the myriad other duties which ecom- jnunity must have i there was little debenture debt the town had no sewage system and most sidewalks were installed under a local im provement plan with benefitting residents jwying a share erf the cost on their taxes p there were few municipal employees other han the four we have mentioned street f leaning and necessary repair work was usually done by hiring some parttime lielp and it was mostly physical labour the old town hall destroyed by fire jast year was still in use for an odd func- jion in the auditorium though it had been replaced by the gregory theatre stage for uch events as the high school commence- jnent and soon after with remodelling of jhe arena the rose room became the new jalace for dances main street though not much enlarged 4oday in number of stores had a every available society from social workers to the hon john yar- emko with the final realization that in ontario a child is free from parental guidance and authority at 16 this same law however contradicts itself by not allow ing them to marry until 16 wi thout a parents consent and signature in bc the age limit for a child to break away from parental authority is 18 in short ontario laws
