by bill ramtachtn without a doubt this was the most exciting convention that the new democratic party have had one could feel in the air the sense ofrurgency by ma ny delegates to pursue extreme changes in party policies to make canada truly independent ecdnomjlly many old line delegates were disturbed at first with the strength and pursuance of the new left within the party however after listening to the eloquent and logical presentat ions of both sides it was ob vious that the only real dif ference was the status quo of the party wanted a waiting per iod and the new left wanted the policies now during the watkins manif esto debate rules were laid down that both sides had ag- reeed to seven delegates to each side with the leader of each delegation being allowed a five minute presentation and all others a three minute pres entation it was obvious that the time allowed was insuffici ent and many speakers were cut oft at the mike before the completion of their presenta tion delegates were disturbed at this trend of events however both parties had agreed to the rules and the chairman remai ned completely inpartial and fair all during the debate as always at debates of this type nicknames were formed for both sides the old line team was called the marsh- mallows and the new left the waffles seemingly these nick names came about when cauc us meetings of both sides pas sed round marshmallows and waffles respectively the vole at the end of debate was 268 or the waffles and 499 fnr the proponents of modera tion in language of the watkins report although defeated in standing votes the watkins sroup suffered no lass as one old timer put it they lost a battle not a war they suc ceeded in pushing the party i further in ils official positions and in pushing the ndps elect ol representatives into making pies for the sole purpose of galling power contrary to reports received in ontario the new left did not challenge t c douglas for the leadership tommy was the only one nominated and went back into office wjth acclama tion at all times when doug las spoke there was unanimous standing ovations seeing our young people in action was a revelation to most old line delegates they are intense theyre intelligent theyre articulate and they are impatent for social change but their approach is totally lacking in emotionalism their addres ses to the convention were lowkeyed wellreasoned and straight forward delegates returning to their ridings will surely realize that the young people of today are our salvation for he future and their demand for a human face to politics must be given priority consideration ct racetrack man next council meeting esquesing council briefs building inspector tom mc lean noted a total of 213188 in building permits issued
