germany wednesday new job with art gallery sculptor leaves terra cotta bebecca sisler the famed sculptress is leaving her beau tiful olde world forge home in terra cotta after 11 years the monumental coinci dences that brought about the change seem to have occurred f partly by accident and partly if by the path of progress rebecca and her family re cently applied to buy a piece of land adjacent to her studio they wished to build an exten sion to their home but as it turned out her studio a pictur- esquefbam like structure that used to house a blacksmith hop was smack dab in the middle of a projected road wid ening project this resulted in jpeel county agreeing with the sislers to buy the property education director meanwhile bebecca was ap pointed education director for the mcmicbael conservation collection of art in kleinburg ontario the turn of events which meant she would need to move house to kleinburg seem ed very strange and the fact that a beautiful old house just the one we would have picked out of them allmn kleinburg was op for sale yet stranger this week hie sislers move out of their home for 10 years although perhaps not as sadly as we should she says feince the turn of events does not permit h rebeccas new position at mc- wcnaels seems to be keeping her busy and she agrees i am very happy in it although 1 did wonder exactly what i was taking on when i began school children droves of school children come the7ballry every day and rebecca has the task of 1 showing them exactly what can adian art is all about she re members especially one cute grade 4 boy who seeing a pic ture of autumn leaves bent down to the floor and picked tip a maple leaf which had been brought in on someones shoes and said miss this must have fallen out of the picture she especially likes the job since it helps our younger gen eration to appreciate art and finds the job not as alien from her life as a sculptor as sh had first thought its very difficult to make a living purely from art admits bebecca xess than two per cent of all artists can afford to live purely from their work and most people wouldnt call what i make a living bebecca began her career at the ontario college of art and did post graduate work for two years at the royal danish aca demy in copenhagen she trav elled extensively through mus- ums in europe and the near east and has exhibited work in galleries throughout the coun try wood sculpture in 1958 she carried out a commission from theart gal lery of toronto to create a wood sculpture for its perman ent collection and in 1960 was awarded a canada council grant to travel in egypt and study antiquities in between times she had various commissions for garden sculptures and exhibitions and in 1964 she visited the remains of ancient mayan civi lization in yucatan and chipas in mexico she has been commissioned to do wood sculptures in chur ches all around ontario and created a peace memorial in stone for markham village in 1968 she travelled to peru to visit ancient inca sites and ha lectured on her return from trips abroad in 1968 she created a large sculptured wooden cross and candlesticks for st pauls ca thedral london ont and was the winner in the cne artists choice exhibition in 1969 she put on a one man show at the shawrlmmington gallery in toronto 12 mclntyre cres dear sir the letter of mrs b b frost last week urging eat the north hilton music festival te con tinued on a competitive basis is slightly misleading mrs frost states that the festival produces no drain on public educationfunds this statement is not correct be cause of the donations received by the festival last year ap proximately one half of the amount came from the former school boards of bsquesing kaamgaweya milton and ac ton in addition the halton board of education did provide some funds for transportation to the festivals at stewarttown and brookvflle in 1969 while i appreciate the entn- usiasm which mrs frost has for the north halton music fes- ival it is evident from attend ance at the meeting held in oc tober that interest is waning it is unfair to suggest that mu sic consultants coordinators administrators are depriving children of the opportunity to compete in the festival when these people are really concer- ned with the total school popuj latioh not tha smaller number which actually participates in the festival perhaps 2000 would be a closer figure of those boys and girls involved last year in my opinion the north hal ton music festival has outlived its usefulness this is not to say however that it should be com pletely disbanded the festival association could continue as a group willing to promote not only music but also other as pects ox tns pexfjoradsjc sets the school popus of- notts halton might
