flown into biafra the world needs us by rev canon j e maxwell st johns stewarttown st stephens hornby thou shalt love god and thy neighbour as thyself luke 1027 did you know if careful attention is not paid to the latitude and altitude under which trees grow natur ally attempts to plant them in different regions may prove unsuccessful these words are central to the christian faith and they mean that christianity is a matter of loving concern wo must be concerned about god the needs of our fellowman even as we are concerned about our own lives it isnt easy for us to be concerned about the plight of our fellow man because we have so many personal prob lems anxieties and worries to the world we appear to be affluent carefree untroubled and they cry to us for help in their hunger and their need we fail to respond because we worry about our own concerns our jobs our health our families etc etc our situation has been illustrated by a recent song about a yellow submarine it is perhaps a twentieth cen tury parable because people can live like submarines it isnt as difficult as it might seem all you have to do hi clang shut the hatch on the outside world and submerge into your own little sea onca in a while run up the per iscope to see what is happening outside but always be sure to pull it right back downagain because you wont want to become involved in alj of that there willbe a lot for you to do in your small world you can tinker with the machv inery worry over it plot a course work out a daily routine but eventually the air will get stale too stale to support life and you will cease to function as a human being and that will be the end of it the world needs us and we have much to give we osnnot ignore the plight of our brethren in the troubled parts of jthe world in biafra in viet nam or wherever be cause we are among those who betleve in the worth of the individual in the brother of man and these are but empty words pious phrases unless we art prepared t give of our time of our money ouf oonltf whose problems whose heed whose hunger hi tnumi greater than our own hlivilmblim
