mn AGENTS LEAVE HIT BIBLES FOR NOME USE American Bible Society Reports on Work Done in the South- western States hy Organi- zation During ]°1? 56,658 BIBLFS ARE PLACED American rHhle nooiety agencies of the Hoathv-pst and Pacific coast make loud >'ome mi«-ion nleas on account of > ast 'nflow" of for^ignors. Many raC"S »j>- represented In Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, California, Ore- gon an" V ash'ngton. and vastly more people of ,v\' '91-uh no* '"presented will come Through their missionary societies churches are doing iruch, but Bible society agents t«U of heavy burdens falling on them. That the making of Americanâ- » cut of these foreigners '.s absolutely essential to the well-being of these vast sections of a common country is the Bible agents' appeal. The southwestern agency of tbe American Bible society reports 56,658 volumes of the scriptures carefull> placed last year, a gain of 13,922. There were 63,472 homes visited by fifty-six Bible colporters, and of these 24,037 homes were found without Bibles hi them Printed In Many Tongues. To supply these homes and the other demands for Bibles there had to be provided scriptures in no rower than thirty-five different languages. This number shows both the dim culty of Bible distribution and tbe remarkable mixture of tongues and peoples. The society's agent Bays: "The thousands of Mexicans cross ing the border into Texas, driven from their native land by revolution; the results of a three-year drought in Oklahoma; the floods from the over- flow of the Mississippi in Arkansas and Louisiana; the cerebro spinal- meningitis scourge in Texas, all re- sult in unusual demands for large do cation* of the scriptures. Our ap propriatlons for this cause were stretched to the limit in many worthy claims." Foreigners in South West. Tbe Bible society's agent gives the number of foreigners in the southwest as follows: In Texas, 100,000 Bo- hemians, 300,000 Germans, 400,000 Mexicans, CO,000 Scandinavians; in Louisiana, working among French speaking people, the Rev. George Manottee traveled 1 ast year 5,324 miles, visited 1,792 homes and found 825 of these homes without Bibles. He supplied 1,424 with scriptures, but was unable to do all of the work put upon him. He thinks the society ought to supply more workers and teachers. The society's central agency sup- plied last year 53,854 copies of tho Scriptures, and the Northwestern 136,- 886 'copies. To enumerate the lan- guages in which these Bibles were printed is but to go over many of the tongues spoken in Europe. Tbe ex- pense put upon tbe society to provide Bibles in so many tongues, and to Support colporters who can dispose of Bibles to peoples speaking so many different tongues is to be taken ac- count of when reckoning results of American Bible society efforts.
