It is considerably doubtful. "We are safeguarding life from en- dangering machinery, and state after elate has passed stringent laws to the effect that fingers, arms, limbs, Ufa it- self, shall be preserved, but parents are careless of placing guards on the mightiestâ€" most crushing and de- structive machinery of allâ€"society. All old-fashioned ideas are not applic- able to modern life, but some havje a characteristic of universal worth, among which is that of strictly chap- eroning young people in their social life. It was a salutary thing when John wooed Mary in the presence Of Mary's practical mother. It made John see the worth of Mary, the privi- lege of her friendship and the serious* ness of taking Mary away to he his companion and care was impressed as it is not In these latter days. "Just now when thousands of allqr- lng avenues are open to lead ottY youth into wrongâ€"avenues of Invention, â- peed, cupidity, we have left almost totally unguarded the cogs or society's ever-present terrible and cruel ma- chine. F. Boyer. All the cases were not disposed of, however, but for a time the Evanston authorities were busy booking- the "speeders" who were arrested by Mo- torcycle Policeman Larkin. F. M. Lyons, 513 Qreenleaf street, Evanston, a chauffeur employed by O. L. Plrle, 1134 Jud- son avenue, received the most severe penalty of any of the autolsts before Justice Boyer, when a fine of $35 and costs was imposed. Lyons was arrested on July 4 on a charge of speeding at the rate of thirty miles an hour in North Prairie avenue. De- spite his plea that a heavy fine would work a hardship on him, In that ne was the sole support of a widowed mother, Lyons was given a lesson for his alleged recklessness. North End Protests. Residents of North Evanston, ac- cording to Motorcycle Policeman Lar- kin, are up in arms against auto speeders. Prominent among these citizens, who declare that they will assist the officers In ridding that sec- tion of the city of the law violators, are Charles L. Burllngbam, 2663 Prairie avenue, and B. P. Brelsmer, 2141 Sherman avenue. Both were witnesses against Lyons Monday. Burlingham is so insistent in his de- mand that a close watch be kept for speeders by the officers, that he vol- unteers to be. on the watch from 4 o'clock on In the morning and assist them by being a witness against those caught It is claimed by the North End resi- dents that the lives of their chil- dren are in Jeopardy because of the high rate of speed at which autolsts pass through the streets in and north, of Central street. They are deter- mined, they say, to put a stop to the perilous practice. Dispose of Wllmette <t*eee. ' Two cases of speed violations, said to have taken place in Wlltoette, were before Justice Boyer Monday. The cases were brought here by Motor- cycle Policeman Laugerham, of Wil- mette, when he was unable to find s Wllmette justice in his office. J. E.
