THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1917 Sl'5'tS5f^p'S|SllfPP^PS DEPALMA MAKES TWO RECORDS LABOR DAY Veteran Racer Annexes Titles in Two Events at Speedway--Loses Fea- ture Race to His Old Rival. HE BEGAN RACING IN 1898 Famous Italian Driver Gained Many Laurels with Bicycle. Ralph De Palma and Louis Chev- rolet shared honors Labor Day at the Chicago Speedway, the former win- ning the twenty and fifty mile events and Chevrolet capturing the big race of the day and the lion's share of the money, whatever it figures out from the gate receipts. Track records fell, too, for in the twenty-mile race the time was 11:02.07, as against 11:34 held by De Palma himself. De Palma also took the fifty-mile record in 28:0J, where- as it had been held by Resta at 31 :S7, made a year ago yast June. De Palma, however, holds to his record •of 55:50 fo rthe hundred miles, but if he had not lost a lap it is sure this, too, would have fallen, for there was a great battle on between De Palma and Chevrolet. Many persons who know Ralph De Palma as one of the star racing driv- ers are not aware that he made his first bid for newspaper publicity as a bicycle rider, as an amateur in 1898. After four successful seasons he turned professional and won a no- table victory in a twelve-hour race at Rochester, N. Y. A year later he cast aside the leg-powered vehicle for its new motor-propelled brother, and as a motorcycle racer gained considerable success on eastern tracks. After four years with the two-wl]eeler he became inoculated with the automobile racing fever and since 1907 has been known the coun- try over as a successful racer, ftsi fct *a fte Ha Formation of Carbon. The market at the present time is flooded with auxiliary air and mois- ture injecting devices, some of which are good and some bad. .The mois- ture injecting devices will in most cases prevent the formation of car- bon on the cylinder walls, but they are not likely to remove carbon al- ready formed, although this claim is made for them. The air devices are practically useless, unless the owner is absolutely certain that the air range of his carburetor is insuffi- cient. If the adjustment already on the carburetor is capable of sup- plying more air an auxiliary air de- vice is a waste of money. ****** Spark Plugs. When the Owner removes a spark plug and finds the porcelain insula- tor broken, the portion which has fallen off may have made its way down between the piston and the cylinder, where it will cause scoring of the metal. This possibility should be taken into consideration, though more often the broken piece will blow out with the exhaust. President Wilson has been asked to put through a $10,000,000 appropria- tion for a federal warplane factory. The suggestion, from Frederick S. Blackall, vice-president and general manager of the Taft-Pierce Manu- facturing company, has been for- warded also to members of Congress and the committee on national de- fense. Mr. Blackall is of the opinion that there is no American airplane at present that can stand or ha-s been able to stand, the test of battle in Europe. He urges the building of those types of planes that have stood the strain of the fierce battles abroad. "It is generally admitted," he said, "that if the European allies had thousands of airplanes where they now have hundreds, the war "would be quickly won. Obviously there is no time to lose." * * * * * BARNEY OLDFIELD WILL PILOT PLANE FOR U. S. Veteran Racer Expects to Battle Germans on Western Front. When Barney Oldfield stepped out of his freak racing car at Maxwelton park in St. Louis after having broken every dirt track records from one to fifty miles, it probably marked his farewell effort at shattering automo- bile speed marks. His wife, who at- tends all of his speed performances, ! later confirmed the fact that Oldfield may never again have opportunity to hang up new records on a track speedway. "Barney has enlisted in the avia- tion corps," said Mrs. Oldfield. "He enlisted at Los Angeles and expects to be called into service some time this fall. Just now he is working on an airplane motor, which he hopes to have available in the near future for government use." The Comfort of the Franklin Car C. There's many a time we wish we could express, in words, the comfort of the Franklin Touring Car. C But it can't be done--because comfort isn't hearing or reading; it's FEELING. CI Ask any Franklin owner. C Do you know any other fine car that guarantees 10,000 miles to a set of tires? (T Do you know any other fine car that will give you 20 or. more mifes to a gallon of gasoline. ft Ask any Franklin owner. C And don't forget our free repair service. This is not so generous In the case of Franklin cars as it sounds--because there are so few repairs on a Franklin. ft Ask any Franklin owner. * C. E. BRIDGES Evanston Franklin Car Company §|0 D*wi» Street I Phone Evanston 5886 FRANKLIN CAR IS EASY TO SELL, DEALER SAYS Bridges Points Out Fine Qualities of Machine He Is Selling. By C. E. Bridges. A number of people have recently traded in their old electrics toward Franklin cars. If those who have not made this change would talk with those who have they would trade, too. With the electric the battery re- placement and short range of travel and worry over not getting back are serious drawbacks. The natural car to choose is the Franklin, as it is so easy to handle and also because it has no radiator to freeze .up or leak. Absence of re- pairs, ease of riding and economical operation are other points about the Franklin that make it a favorite. We instruct every member of the family that is old enough to run it. It is a curious fact that the person who owns an automobile almost in- variably thinks some other kind than the one he has is a better car--except a person who owns a Franklin car, and he almost invariably thinks his car the best, for he knows other makes give their owners much more trouble and do not ride as easily or give half as much mileage for a gal- lon of gasoline or for a set of tires. These are only a few of the rea- sons for the demand for the Franklin car. They're easy to sell and it's a pleasure to sell them, since each new owner speaks a good word to his friends for the Franklin. ***** Trask Visiting Here. Leland Trask of Brooklyn, N.
