LTG47-3tc CO-OPERATIVE BUYING SAVES THEM BIG SUM Co-operative buying by employes is saving thousands of dollars an- nually for workers of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber company of Akron, Ohio. Already there is a grocery store, tailor shop and curb market for garden truck in operation. At the grocery store commodities are sold slightly above cost, suits can be purchased more reasonably and garden truck bought direct from the farmers. The grocery store, operated by the Service Pin association, compos- ed of employes of long-time service with the company, saved approxim- ately $50,000 for workers last year. The curh market is the latest ven- ture and has proved a great success. More than 1,500 employes purchased garden truck on the opening day and assured business to farmers who were at first skeptical as to the bene- fit that would accrue to them. CHICAGO ROAD PILOT TELEGRAPHS PROGRESS In a telegram from Minden, Ne- braska, to Charles H. Hayes, pres- ident of the Chicago Motor club, Charles P. Root, veteran knight of the road, logging the. route from Chicago to Los Angeles for the Chi- cago organization, says he has aver- aged 189 miles per day for 756 miles covered. He is driving a Lexington and is getting 18.6 miles per gallon. Gas prices run from29.5 to 30.75 cents per gallon. He finds that the farm- ers have 20 per cent of last year's crops on hand. They are long on crops and hogs, but short on cash. Roads are in a poor condition from Geneseo. 111., to East Moline. The River-to-River road out of Daven- port is a bit rough for seven miles, the rest is in good condition. Road work going on everywhere. Since the armistice was signed Switzerland has become a country of secondhand motor vehicles. The ma- chines are brought from England, France, Germany and Italy. Japan is sending Mr. K. Takata, chiet engineer of the public works section of the Kanagawa perfectual office to this country, to study road building methods and materials.
