FRIDAY, APRIL 22, 1921 The Mothers' Day Posy - Mothers"Day is to be celebrated â€"this year, according to the* proclama- tion of the International Mothers' Day association, without flowers, pos sibly as a protest against the dispo sition to commercialize the occasion, possibly as an expression of a de- sire to stimulate a disposition to the exercise of economy, as the pro- nouncement of the association reads. _ It has been a pleasing custom of the pastfor everybody to wear the single carnation on Mothers' Day as a little tribute to Motherhood, a very small sacrifice to make even when any sacrifice was necessary. The ben- efit of the wearing of the flower has fallen in much fuller measure -upon the sons and daughters than upon the Mothers, because of the wholesome effect upon the soul of man to reflect upon the spirit of sacrifice which has always marked the relationship be- tween child and mother. The International Mothers' Day as- sociation has decreed against the ob- sefvanc«râ„¢of Mothers' Day in the usual fashion, but there is nothing to _ prevent ttve personal-foilowing-o£ custom by individuals. It is a grace- ful thing to do, worth all it costs and more, and a healthy exercise of the capacity for appreciation of the love and service which has been given them during their years of depeml- -ence. â€"----------â€"-------â€" _â- _- N©r Altered By Circumstances The Supreme court has refused to review the cases ,of the eighty radi- cals who were convicted in 1918 of seeking to obstruct the draft and the men will be returned to the federal penitentiary, in accordance with their senfe~nce at the time of their conviction. This is the exception -to prove -the rule- that circumstances alter cases. It affords a precedent that may well govern the disposition of all cases of persons who sought in any way to prevent the successful carrying out of the war aims of the nation. , Just at this moment there may be mo opportunity for men who exercised themselves endeavoring to obstruct the program of this country in its preparation to take its part, in the ^reaT^warriJur it^Tnay"Tsfely be as- 4ne4=*hart-~the Tnoment such oppor~ "~v LXty presented itself they would re- su their tactics of the war period. tlis as a precaution against their c of loyalty to the country that ~ir conviction is justified, not be- j«^e of what they succeeded in do- j\ in the early days of the war. lat'lack of loyalty will continue to jirect their activities.
