14 THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 1921 Public library News and Reviews BY SUE OSMOTHERLY, LIBRARIAN The Brimming Cup, by Dorothy Canfieldâ€" "Mrs. Dorothy Canfield Fisher loves sharp contrasts, and she is peculiar- far well equipped for producing them. From few other novelists might we have so glorious a sunset over the Campagne â€" 'Rome gleaming palely like a cluster of tiny, tarnished pearls, remote and legendary*; then with the turn of a page, a romantic moment in the life of a Vermont village, when all the men and women and children of the little ugly wooden houses go on a pilgrimage under the stars, that they may take part in a rite of devotion to something rare and beautiful â€" a vis- ion of the bursting into bloom of the Night-Blooming Cereus 1 \___ The scheme of the novel Ts~so sim- ple- as- to be unusual in these days of complex motive, A marriage for love takes husband and wife from the keen joys of foreign travel and fixes them firmly in a Vermont village. The man devotes his quiet capability to the development of a wood-fac- tory, finding his opportunityjor pub- lic service in the just and righteous methods of his legitimate business. The wife orders her household, brings up her three children (drawn with enchanting skill and delicacy), and puts her splendid musical ability at the service of the community. 4Ufe moves easily and busily until anoth- er man appears â€" an unscrupulous, godless, hot-blooded egotist, whose very audacities and reckless, if bril- liant, diatribes divert and startle the wife, whose agile mind has been growing a bit-stiff under the pres- sure of routine duties. The mob is restrained by no conscientious scru- ples, and makes.a bold try for the conquest of the lovely woman. There is just enough uncertainity in the sit- uation to excite the reader's horror â€"and then all the rightmindedness and loyalty of the wife and mother coHRhfe her rescue. She knows her- self a long procession of parents and children-each giving all that each had to give-each passing on the cup brimming with life and hfes sweet- ness. • •â- â€¢ The Brimming Cup is a gracious, wholesome storyâ€"a victory of love over passion, of courage over fear, of patience and tenderness over cruelty and cynicism." Alice Adams, by Booth Tarkingtonâ€" Alice Adams is a smart, right pret- ty girl, worthy of a leading position in society but lacking what her moth- er calls background - »«*{»«**?« house and ample wardrobe. Her fatti- er, honest but unambitions, is goaded by his wife into an unethical business project, and there is Walter, the way- ward brother, all of whom only add to Alice's discomfort and unpopular- ity The girl makes a futile attempt I to be socially successful, but when I she realizes the mistake, is resigned land determined to make the hum- , drum of life worthwhile. Haynes purchasers, and pros- pective purchasers, will be glad to know that they are fully pro- tected against any decrease in the present list prices of Haynes cars for the balance of the year. The present margin of profit is so slight that it would be im- possible for usjttjreduce the pnceToFHaynes cars without lowering our standard of manu- January 1,1922 facture. This, of course, we will not do. And so, in justice to our many thousands of Hay nes owners and to those who might be hesitating in the purchase of their Haynes cars in anticipa- tion of aprice decrease, we have announced this guarantee of our prices until January 1,1922. ^tJtider-this^^uarantee every Haynes purchaser is fully pro- tected against any reduction of Haynes car prices for the bal- ance of this year. The Haynes company has always given the greatest pos- sible value to Haynes buyers, and in offering the Haynes Fifty at $1985 [io.b. factory] we have sacrificed a certain amount of present profit in the hope that, later on, the reduction in the manufacturing costs would allow us a fair margin of profit It is a common statement, heard every where, that the Haynes fac- tory is not making the neces- sary profit on the Haynes Fifty, the smaller and lighter Haynes six-cylinder car. These remarks reflect the motor-buying pub- lic's opinion of the extreme value of the Haynes Fifty and other Haynes cars. Hundreds of owners have also said right along that theHaynes models 4L 'are at least $1000 underpriceijL That is why we say the Haynes is the greatest value on the market to-day.
