22 THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, FRIDAY, NQVEMBER 11, 1921 BETTER GOVERNMENT AIDED BY LOCAL MEN Prominent North Shore Citizens Co- Operate fat Splendid Work of the Citizens' Association of Chicago Several of the north shore's most prominent citizens have been instru- mental in aiding the citizens of Illi- nois, Cook County and the City of Chicago in securing better administra- tion of municipal, county and state affairs, as leaders in the Citizens' Association of .Chicago, the oldest civic reform organization in America, which, since jts inception in 1874, has been a great force for good govern- ment in the state of Illinois. Among those men who are promin- ently identified with the association are George E. Cole, of Wilmette, hon- orary president and member of Board of Directors; Shelby M. Singleton, Wilmette, secretary and treasurer; and Leslie F. Gates, Wilmette; Roy C Osgood, Wilmette; and Wilford C. Shurtleff, Wilmette, directors. In- cluded among these men is Augustus S. Peabody, president, who is a sum- mer resident of Winnetka. The officers of the association were re-elected at a meeting this month when President Peabody presented the forty-seventh annual report, later' published in pamphlet form, setting forth the activities of the association in the past year. Aids State Funds' Probe This report shows that the associa- tion, which has a membership of more than 1000 taxpayers, was responsible, directly or indirectly for the investi- gation of the alleged mishandling of state funds by former state treasur- ers and the subsequent indictment of Governor Len Small, formerly state treasurer. The report, in this connec- tion, commends the efforts of State Treasurer Edward E. Miller, in re- vealing appearerit irregularities in the state treasurers' office, discovered at his entrance. upon those duties, At- torney General Brundage and State's Attorney Mortimer of Sangamon county.
