8 A THE LAKE SHORE NEWS, FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 1922 Tells the Story of Arden Shore Camp __^^« ^ {Continued from page I) vailed and a frathe dining room was built, which could X>e screened from the flies, and was connected with the kitchen, built the year beforev Purchase Permanent Site. . These general entertainments,' in ^rT^oh& form or another, were contin- ued under the able leadership of Mrs. ~ P. B. McMullin, until we had a fund of $8,000 to start the purchase of a permanent site. ___„-In-june-4007 an opHon-waa-takePiâ€"-^ on our present property of 21-^odd. acres of woodland on the Shore of Lake Michigan just notth uf-theâ„¢vli- lage of Lake Bluff. Possession was -^obtained in March 1908, at a total cost of $17,000, and the deed -was only the third transfer from the gov- ernment. There was certainly no activity in real (estate then! ZZ Afterwards it was felt that the name of the camp should be changed as much confusion - aitose; in the minds of subscribers, between Gads Hill Settlement in Chicago and Gads â€" Hill-Gajpp^at Lake Bluff. The di- rectors wished to express, in the new name, the beauty of the location, and, _ casting about in their minds for something suitable, they^ hit upon been provided from time to time through the generosity of our many friends. The winter of 1912-13 saw the ful- fillment of the long discussed plan by which the property could be used the year round. The character of this work was that of caring for men who would be benefited by fresh air, out- of-door sleeping, and nourishing food, whether they were convalescing from illness or just in a generally depleted condition. This work was very successful while it lasted, but during the war it had to be discon-. tinued for lack of funds. Boys' Camp Latest Feature But in the fall of 1919"'the camp was again opened for winter workâ€" this time for undernourished boys who could not get their working cer- tificates. This work is now so well established and the results are so gratifying that Arden Shore-may be regarded as a permanent year round camp. » The particular * natural advantages of the camp are its 300 foot frontage on a large lake, which admits of hy- gienic bathing and , swimming; the Arden Shore thus givingâ€"theâ€"idea of the forest and the water. Now Thriving Camp ^~ The work of the camp and tits value to the community have stead- ily^increased from year to year.
