Miss Miller's eyesight has been far below normal since birth, and in order to conserve it for ma- ture years, her mother has read alT subjects to her since beginning gram- mar school. Miss Miller has so mastered the art of concentration that she gets a firm grasp of the subject at one hearing. In order to save her eyesight, she has learned the touch system of typewriting and makes out all her reports, and keeps her note- books up-to-date in thisi mannerT~____ Despite her handicap, Miss Miller has * westernâ€"Uni- versity's Varsity debate team, this is the third'time in the history of the insti- tution that a girl has been a member of the 'Varsity team. She debated on Northwestern's affirmative team which recently won a unanimous deci- -sien-against the University of Chicago on the question; "Resolved that the United States should adopt the Brit- ish svstem of Unemployment Insur- ance." _. When Miss Miller came from Okla- homa to continue her education at North- western her mother accompanied her, and has patiently devoted a great deal of time reading aloud in order to see her daughter realize her ambitions. T. C. Cunningham, Northwestern!s de- bate coach, in commenting upon Miss. Miller's achievement, said: Because of impaired vision, Miss M#- ler could not take advantage of thfe privilege of using memoranda cards;; hence she had to memorize a great number of references to authorities. Her references were-more copious andt aoccurate than those of any other member of either team. This con- tnbuted- greatly to Chicago's defeat, Two of the judges of the debate took occasion, after thfc contest, to compli- ment her upon her excellent work. Pro- fessor J. M. O'Neill, head of the de- partment of oratory at the University of Wisconsin, one of the judges, as- serted that Miss Miller is one of the best woman debaters he has ever heard." Miss Miller is a member of the Lamb- da Phi Delta sorority of the School of Speech at Northwestern University. She has taken important parts in plays produced by the Thalian Dra- matic association and has given num- erous programs of interpretative readings w'^h grxaLjsiicrpss GRADE SCHOOL QUINTET CONTINUES VICTORIES Continuing its unbroken string of victories the Wilmette grade"school heavyweight basketball team sent the Uncoliiwuud, EvdiiMtoll,' lUJUVies down to a 22 to 11 defeat last Friday after- noon.
