|T$^?ET"W$ THE LAKE SHORE NEWS- FRIDAY, MARCH 30. 1923 Public Library News and Reviews Morley Where the blue begins* Lovers of Christopher Motley's Ijooksâ€"and they are manyâ€"will be Jvery glad to know that we have his latest book, "Where the blue, begins." The hero, Mr. Gissing, is a most hu- jrnan person, and his search for the place where the blue begins will af- for.d an unusually pleasant hour. Gibb's The-middle of the road. Considered as a novel "The middle of the road" may be dismissed ab- ruptly, for the story element in it is Secondary. The real purpose of the book is to portray, as disinterestedly as possible, conditions among Euro- pean people after the war. This por- trayal is successful, says The Lit- erary Review. . . .Overlooking the novel interestâ€"which perhaps has been utilized mechanically in an ef- fort to gain the attention of readers that could not be reached by a book dealing purely with the conditions of contemporary Europeâ€""The middle of the road" deserves broad atten- tion. Philip Gibbs, like his central character, manages himself to hold the middle of the road; he is sym- pathetic, understanding, never hys- terical. In fact, so much is one im- pressed by his broad sympathy and comprehension of human beings that one might reasonably wish that at some later date, when he has ceased to feel the overpowering interest in contemporary sociaf-political con- ditions, thatâ€"is now evident, he might present a novel more purely artistic and less weighted with fact. Tietjens ........ Body and raiment. A book of poems distinguished, in an era of camouflage, by a complete spiritual honesty. In it the author has set down with rare scrupulous- ness the exact shade of emotion and experience, .and this quality, which is characteristic of all great lyric^ po- etry, carries it out of the pergonal into the universal. It is a true por- trait of one heart (her own), and thus a portrait of all human hearts. This is the more true because Mrs, Tietjens is herself a complex per- sonality, touching many realms of the spirit. She has lived in Amenta, in Europe and in the Orient; with many dreams and many peoples. Arid all of them she has met with the same scrupulousness, taking nothing second-hand, trying to see them and to put them down exactly as she found them. Tl\e sense of back- ground in her book is very great. (Publisher's note.) CHEKOV ....-...........•. Plays. There is much interest at the present time in Russian drama and literature, and your library has two volumes of plays by Anton Chekov, whom critics call the greatest figure in Russian literature since Turgenev. A true realist, he combines with a masterly style an objectivity, and a complete aloofness.
