&«&K&*>*"* tPPT Airi? gwnPR NRWS FRIDAY. fUNJ^ AUTHORS t ADVANCE NOTICE The following passage occurs# in a new book promised by Macmillan for fall publicationâ€""Memories of the Russian Court," by Anna Viro- ubova, lady-in-waiting and friend of ithe Russian royal family. I "The Empress and the children have fceen represented as surrounded by German servants, but this accusation is absolutely false ... "The children had French, Swiss and English tutors, but all their studies were under the superintend- ence of a Russianj^the (Highly cul- tured M. Petroff. /Theiriirst teacher was a native of one of the Baltic states of the Empire, and was heart and soul in her devotion to the fam- ily. She accompanied them to Si- beria and there disappeared with them. Thje three under maids, all Russians, who cared for the rooms of ihe Empress and the children, re- mained faithful' to the family when Itie Revolution came, and one of them, as I shall tell later, performed fhe dangeous service of smuggling letters in and out of Siberia. ] "I give these details because I think it only just to offset with facts the lying slanders of sensational writers who could not possibly have known anything of the intimate life of the Imperial family of Russia, but who nave substituted propaganda for truth." f§ â€"The MacMillan Company, j The argument is based pn A compell- ing array of facts. # The people are shown in their voluntary associations consumers per- forming for themselves the services which profit-business performs and which the socialized state aims to perform. These associations, independent of politics and philanthropy, are steadily growing into a marvelously organized world movement. Some 30,000,000 members are now represented in the International Co-operative Alliance. Co-operators today are efficiently carrying on every sort of enterprise, democratically owned and adminis- tered, such as stores, restaurants, fac- tories, mines, telephones, electrical service, transportation, mills, bakeries, farms,...........banks, insurance, housing, schools and recreations. Dr. Warbasse. has long been oc- cupied working in the Co-operative Movement, studying Co-operation in many countries, and teaching Co-op- erative Democracy. â€"The MacMillan Company. daughter, takes eight radicals with him on a journey in the interest of humanity. Naturally the crew, fol- lowing his idea, mutiny, take charge of the entire ship in the name of the Soviet Government, and abandon the poor passengers on a desert isle. Their struggles are human and thor- oughly comical. There is the mother who "rules by love," aiid her ever- present son, the minister ifho has lost faith and doesn't know whether his prayers are "to a guide or a guide- post," the doughnut king, Miss Peeb- les, poetess, the vegetarian doctor, the young lady who "was poor and alone and wanted a piano," the half- witted street urchin, and poor Mr. Waddick the unwilling traveller. Their efforts are screamingly funny and symbolical.* It is a book full of gorgeous nonsense, with many a hid- den meaning lurking between gasps. â€"The MacMillan Company. MR. PODD By Freeman Tilden Mr. Tilden cleverly takes the pseudo-seriousness of the time and makes delightful comedy of it with- out introducing objectionable propa- ganda. Mr. Podd, millionare philan- thropist, with his charming "modern" MILE-HIGH DANCING V In Colorado's pioneer days Creeae, with its gold prospectors and dancing senoritas, outdid the present endur- ance dancers.
