Attractively Illustrated ; The circular is illustrated with sev- eral different angles, and gives in de- tail the reason why citizens should sign the petition to the park board which will be presented in a few days. The president of the club was so elated with the artistry of the young violinist that he was immediately engaged for a return ap- pearance for the club for Nov. 16. Mr. Lusk played recently by special arrangement of his manager for some of the largest radio stations in Chi- cago. After one of his concerts, there were several inquiries for violin in- struction. Milan Lusk who is devot- ing some of his time this summer to teaching, has been the recipient of a splendid endorsement from his former instructor, Prof. Sevcik (teacher of Kubelik and Morini) who recom- mends Mr. Lusk as his only author- ized assistant: 'â- â- â- â- ^ •^k^,^;^ Zipf Issues Statement of WumeuVs Finances In another part of this issue of The Lake Shore News will be found the annual Financial Statement of the Village of Wilmette as, present- ed to the Board of Trustees recently by President Zipf. . It » recognized that birds are the most efficient agents in destroying the insect pests which mure and ultimately kill trees and[.shrubs. Children are taught to protect birds and we are urged to encourage in every way the coming of birds to the village. Still we allow active enemies of birds, to operate without disturbance. During the last ten days of enforced quiet upon an open porch, I have watched the hunt- ing activities of a single cat. bo far 1 can estimate he kills from four to six birds daily. This is specially easy at present when so many young birds are about. At this rate this single cat will destroy some hundred birds a month. If we multiply this by the numerous cats running wild in the village, it is apparent that the normal increase in bird population is neutralized. Cats not onLjt-kill-but-also interfere with the nesting of birds. Some measures to combat this nui- sance may be suggested: Licensing cats as with dogs, and requiring a belrupon every cat; a reward for the scalps of cats and the shooting of every cat with- out a bell by the village police; suitable village ordinances covering this matter GEORGE H.
