FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1923, CANADA ENJOYS A BUMPER YEAR Car Manufacturers Expect Increasing Market Canadian automobile plants are op- erating at capacity and a survey of general business conditions through- out the Dominion warrants motor car manufacturers in expecting an in- creasing market, according to a state __mmt* marie byJEdws^^-Wci^Cff-tiv Cadillac Motor Car, company of Canada, Oshawa, Ontario, while in Detroit attending the annual summer ..convention of the Cadillac organiza- tion. "The agricultural outlook is the best in Canadian history, with the ex- ception of the rye crop, which is disappointing," states Mr. Weil. "This case with the wheat crop, which is estimated at 500,000,000 bushels, as compared with 400,000,000 bushels in 1922. Oats and barley are the other major crops for which the outlook is particularly good. "In pulp production, Canada leads the world," Mr. Weil continued, "and this industry is operating at capacity. Further revenues for our railroads have recently been assured by the bill passed by parliament placing an embargo upon the exportation of pulp. One carload of pulp turned in- to paper in Canada means four car- loads1 of freight going into and com- ing out from the mills, besides in- creased volume of manufacturing. "While two thousand freight cars jwere_rectnt\y ordered Jjyâ€"4 weâ€"raifc ^oad^Ttfiere is still a shortage of roll- ing stock to handle the expected crops. Iron and steel ixusi»€ss, al- though stiir below normal, is gaining each month, recent increased business being due to railroad orders. "Export business has been making' great gains. /During 19221, exports were valued at $884,362,583, an increase of more than $80,000,000 over 1921. The balance of trade in 1922 was $1^, 023,274, as compared with $3,221^37 in 1921. In 1922 Canada led the world in per capita trade. "The saving to Canadian purchas- ers of Cadillac cars by the establish- ment of our plant at Oshawa has proved a powerful impetus to larger sales in Canada. Coupled with the sound and encouraging business con- ditions, it has determined us in a course of continuous further develop- ment there."
