Waukegan and Shermer Rd Northbrook, 111. 30L40-Stc R.0.T.C.B0YS ENJOYING CAMP Local Youths Are Happy at Camp Roosevelt Among the north shore boys who are spending the summer at Camp Roose- velt, the national boy-building encamp- ment on Silver Lake, Indiana, are Roy Herbert Jarrett, 534 Essex road, Kenll- worth, J. Thomas Taussig, 8 N. First street, Highland Park, and Joseph S. Monfort, 1124 Linden avenue, and Ove Weberg, 1410 Hill street, of Wilmette. Roy Jarrett and Ove Weberg are in Company "F" of the R. O. T. C. di- vision, while the others are members of the junior camp. Reports from their company commanders are to the effect that all of the boys are making excel- lent records, stand high in their or- ganizations, and are generally well liked by officers and cadets alike. Roy Jarrett is fast earning his way to a cadet officer's rank. Camp life as a Roosevelt "rookie" has begun in earnest for the youthful soldiers. Swimming, athletics, military drill, "Y" entertainments, instruction in first aid, health and hygiene, as well as horsemanship, are included in the pro- gram. The horsemanship course has be- come so popular that additional horses have been sent for from the Rasmussen riding academy in Chicago. Every af- ternoon a class of riders may be seen riding across the rolling country on beautiful shiny horses, under the expert instruction of a master of equitation Many boys who were unable to go for the entire seven weeks are registering ing these periods, interest is increased - in inter company sports, swimming meets and various competitions, and many boys who are interested in sports have un- usually good chances to win honors. Catholic Societies of North Shore in Picnic Sunday, August 10, has been an- nounced as the date of an outing to be observed jointly by Ouilmette Council, Knights of Columbus, and Ouilmette Court, Daughters of America. The scene will be the Forest Preserves at Glenview. Field events, races and athletic con- tests are to be among the day's activities, it is announced. < Black Worm Plays Havoc In North Shore Gardens A long black worm has made its ap- pearance in the north shore villages and is devouring currant bushes and certain plants, especially perennials. The worm is said to be of the cater- pillar specie and is not unlike the pest J that attacks cabbages. It is reported ftfc . 'large numbers around Highland Pam^^ Glencoe and Winnetka, where it is play- ing havoc with the currants.
