Hartmann, Henry
- Full Text
Henry Hartmann, 537 Illinois road, Wilmette, is another native New Trier resident whose memory runs back to the early days when the North Shore was virgin forest, and neighbors few and far between. He was born on October 1, 1867, in the same house in which he now lives and has occupied throughout his life. He was married on November 15, 1896, to Barbara Barg, of Niles Center. Their five children and three grandchildren were all born in the Hartmann homestead. The five children, all married, now live in closely adjacent homes built on the property.
Mr. Hartmann recalls when there were but eighteen houses in Wilmette, and when, a a boy of ten or twlve years, he herded cows as they grazed along the ridge on which his home stands. As a mechanic he helped in building the first homes erected in Kenilworth, and has contributed his skill to the upbuilding of the entire township.
