Caption: The flag on the Village hall lawn was at half staff early this week in tribute to the memory of Ernest White, 78, of 410 Park avenue, superintendent of streets for 32 years, until his retirement in 1935. Mr. White passed away Friday, March 24, and funeral services were held Monday, March 27, at St. John's Lutheran church, the Rev. J. H. Gocket officiating. Burial was at Memorial Park cemetery.

Mr. White had been a resident of Wilmette since 1882. He was born in Germany November 5, 1860, and was brought to this country by his parents when 7 years of age, the family settling near Algonquin, Ill.

"Brings Bride to Village" He was married to Louise Muenzel in 1882, and shortly after brought his bride to Wilmette. A son and three daughters were born to this union of whom Mrs. Sarah Neumann of West Chicago and Mrs. Ella Flinn of San Francisco survive. Mrs. White passed away in 1897. In 1898 Mr. White married Mrs. Sophie Hacker, of whose children Fred Hacker and Mrs. Minnie Kossow of Wilmette survive. Mrs. Sophie Hacker White died in 1925. Mr. White began his service to the village in 1903.

"Ardent Church Worker" He was a charter member of St. John's Lutheran church. Already in 1893 he had sought to have a congregation of his faith and tongue established here, but it was not until 1903 that the permanent organization could be effected. His interest in the financial welfare of the church meant very much to it in its early days, and he remained a staunch member and supporter of St. John's until his end. His departure is mourned also by seven grandchildren, among whom is Mrs. Louise Schopen with whom he made his home since 1925, and four great-grandchildren. Six of the grandsons served as active pallbearers, while men from the village departments who had worked with him were honorary pallbearers.
