Hildreth, Edward Carpenter (Died)

Edward Carpenter Hildreth, who, as reported in Wilmette Life last week, was taken by death Tuesday, February 19, following a brief illness, was a descdendent of well known Chicago pioneers. Mr. Hildreth was born in Colorado Springs, Col., July 6, 1896, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Philo Carpenter Hildreth. He was a great grandson of Philo Carpenter, who came to Chicago, then Fort Dearborn, in 1832. This pioneer established the first drug store in the Village of Chicago, and founded the first Congregational church in the city. Edward Hildreth, grandfather of Mr. Hildreth, was an ordained minister in the Congregational church, who moved from Chicaago to Colorado Springs. Philo Carpenter Hildreth, his father, was professor of history at Parson's college, Fairfield, Iowa, and his widow still resides there.

Served in France
After his grammar school days Mr. Hildreth entered Lake Forest academy, and from this institution he went to Beloit college. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. In his junior year he enlisted in the army and was in France for the duration of the war. He returned to Beloit college to complete his academic education. It was during his college days that he met Miss Margaret Owen, who became his wife on February 7, 1925. To them were born two sons, Owen Richard and Edward Carpenter Junior, who with their mother, reside in Wilmette. The family is affiliated with the First Congregational church here. Mr. Hildreth came to Chicago in 1923 in the employment of the United States Gypsum company, where he remained until 1932 in when he was transferred to Montgomery Ward and company. At the time of his death he was personnel manager for that company.

Stricken With Pneumonia
On Friday morning, February 15, Mr. Hildreth was stricken with pneumonia, and on February 19 he passed away. The funeral services were conducted at Graceland chapel by Rev. John G. Hindley, and he was laid to rest in the Carpenter burial lot, where five generations of the family lie.
