First Lieutenant, Aviation Service, 185th Night Chasse Squadron
After the armistice was signed, while on burying duty in France, he met with a fatal accident through the fault of an automobile driver. He died later from injuries received.

Survived, at the time of his death, by:
Parents, Charles R. & Mary Louise Smith, 112 Broadway av., Wilmette
Born December 19, 1895 at Oak Park. Attended New Trier High School and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
Entered the Aviation Service on August 20, 1917 at Champaign Ground School and was promoted to the rank of first Lieutenant. Was in active service with the 94th Aero Squadron in France from September 30 to November 9. He was then transferred to the 185th and was with that squadron at the time of his death.
