- Wilmette was incorporated on September 17, 1872. The incorporators were Messrs. Martin R. M. Wallace, Noel V. Borden and Calvin DeWolf, and members of the first board were Messrs. John G. Westerfield, C. T. Boggs, B. M. Munn, A. T. Sherman, Alexander McDaniel and A. Shants. The first president was Mr. John G. Westerfield. Wilmette has grown from a small hamlet to a population of 7,000 consisting of more than 1,600 families. The finances of the village has not increased as much. The trustees must handle village matters with inadequate money.
Recently a garbage ordinance was passed providing for the cleaning up and keeping clean of alleys which have been in unsanitary condition for years.
Taxes for this year are higher than previously because real estate valuations in Cook County have increased.
The village should be better lighted and the police force increased. The trustees are perfecting a business system for the village to insure efficiency. Photograph Oscar W. Schmidt, President of the Village - Date of Publication
