- Private First Class LeRoy Schneider of Wilmette was one of about 450 U.S. Marines who led a small force of Americans defending Wake Island, beset hours after the Dec. 7 attack on Pearl Harbor. He survived the attack but endured almost four years as a prisoner of war. Schneider died August 18 in his Barrington Home at the age of 86, never having fully recovered from some of hte illnesses andinjuries sustained in captivity.
