- The kindergarten enrichment class has been studying artists and their works. They spent a great deal of time looking at Georges Seurat's "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" in order to understand pointillism. They then tried to recreate a small part of the picture for themselves. After working on their paintings, they received a visit from local artist Mark Howard. He explained how he creates portraits, working from a photograph to a sketch to a completed work.
• All of the children have been studying caterpillars that arrived in the mail. Any day now it will be time to move them into butterfly pavilions to await the metamorphosis into Painted Lady butterflies. The toddlers also have a ladybug "dome." Currently larvae are crawling around in it, consuming special food. The school reports that the children are eagerly awaiting the pupa stage, and then the ladybugs will emerge.
• Many of the children have been working on phonics with the sandpaper letters and matching objects. Using the moveable alphabet, they are building words. In Montessori, the children learn to "write" or build words; then they move on to simple readers and finally to reading real books.
• Subscription parties from the winter benefit are happening. A mother-daughter luncheon is planned as well as a bowling party at Wilmette Bowl.
• A few openings remain in the five-day afternoon class for 2008-09. For information or to arrange an appointment to visit the school, call us (847) 256-2002 or send e-mail to rosehallschool@sbcglobal.net.
