The exercises which marked the flag raising at the Central avenue and Logan schools Friday morning when more than 600 Wilmette school children grouped in a body about the two flagstaffs, sang patriotic songs and recited patriotic verse, came as an appropriate pre-holiday observance and will long be remembered by the hundreds of participants.
The first flag was hoisted at the Central avenue school. More than a hundred fond parents gathered about the school yard to enjoy the exercises. Following the exercises at that school, the children marched to the Logan school where the second flag was raised. The singing of patriotic songs by grades and then in concert was a feature.
At the Logan school a short speech was made by Superintendent Harper in which he told the pupils that they should always respect the flag and realise fully the meaning of the emblem. The singing was conducted by Stella C. Mayer, supervisor of music in the public schools.
The new flagstaffs are of steel and are embedded in a concrete foundation. Each cost more than $150 but will last for years.- Featured Link
