With the torrid weather arriving earlier than usual this year, the Wilmette public bathing beach is proving a veritable mecca for young and old. On Sunday morning and afternoon large crowds gathered at the beach and sought relief from the intense rays of the sun in the lake.
As no buildings have been provided, the out-of-town people who bathe in the lake at the beach have been annoying the residents in the neighborhood of the beach by dressing in full view of the several homes there. COmplaint was made at the meting of the village trustees last week and the matter was referred to the public serivce committee for action. Because of the nearness to the Northwestern Elevated terminal, the distance being only a few blocks, a large number of persons from Chicacgo form crowds at the beach on Saturdays and Sundays. Many of these persons have little or no regard for the residents of the village and oftentimes create scenes at the place.
Last summer a movement was started by the Juvenile Protectie association of the north shore looking toward the placing of a police matron or other officer at the beach to preserve order and also to look after the boys and girls who congregate there. The association is without funds to promote this scheme this summer unless some generous hearted citizens come forward with cash donations for payment for services of such an officer. In Winnetka a swimming instructor and his wife were engaged last summer at the public bathing beach of that village and gave valuable services in looking after the welfare of the scores of children and young people.
It is claimed that the Wilmette bathing beach is one of the finest along the north shore. IT is sandy and well gravelled for a distance of several hundred feet along the shore, which also extends into the lake for several yards. The placing of buildings at the beach for the bathers is one of the public improvements greatly needed.
