- Wilmette Preident Chris Canning had ash trees in his yard that were infested with emerald ash borers. As a personal project to test the idea, he paid to have the trees turned into baseball bats dubbed "Wilmette Wonderboy" The Wilmette Baseball Association's Pinto League field tested about two dozen of the bats earlier this month. The bat manufacturer, Bats by Buck in Skokie, has gotten about 60 orders for remaining bats, said Tom Royce, owner of the custom bat company. The bats have been very popular. Comments by Bruce Horigan, Glenview co-owner of Horigan Urban Forest Products. Horigan's company sawed and dried the wood in its Lincolnshire facility.
