An unusually large number of New Trier instructors are doing grduate work at Northwestern and Chicago universities this year. Mr. Francis I. Walker, head of the department of English and director of the s chool orchestra, has registered for a course in orchestration at the School of Music. He is, in addition, leader of the university band, and player in it. Mr. Phillips, head of the department of manual training, has registered for a course in secondary education given by Professor Jones. Dr. Small, instructor of Latin and English, who received his PhD. from Princeton in 1913 and who would have taken a year's leave of absence to study in Germany this year but for the war, has registered for a course in Greek historians under Dr. Flickinger. Miss Laura Ullrich, head of the department of history, has registered for two graduate courses in history with Dr. Harris and Dr. Heckel. Miss Pauline Brooke of the departmet of English is taking three courses in German with Professors Curme and Hatfield. She is now a candidate for a master's degree from Northwestern. Miss Wester of the department of English and Spanish, is taking a course in short story writing with Professor Lovett of the University of Chicago, and Mr. Hyatt, whose speciality is swimming and soccer, is taking two courses at Northwestern in the department of commerce. When one recalls that the school session is not over until three o'clock this year, one realizes that it is something of an accomplishment for these seven instructors to do work at these universities in addition to their regular work.

Better car service for New Trier
After countless protests, complaints, and exhortations on the part of principal, school board and students, the directors of the Milwaukee Electric line have at last given better accomodations to the New Trier students both morning and afternoon. Double headers from north and south reach the Ivy Court station at about 8:10 thus enabling students to reach their class roms by 8:25, when all must report. In the afternoon double headers leave the station for north and south at 3:10. The cars are still somewhat crowded, but are far more comfortable than ever before at this time.

New Trier Sponsor System
All students of the school have now been assigned to their various sponsors. The sponsor system at New Trier is a provision for enabling each student to have some one instructor to whom he may turn in tie of need as to a friend, and to whom parents and other instructors may turn for advise in case of perplexity. Each instructor has about twenty students under his care. Theses are from the different academic classes and different towns, and the group is in every way a democratic unit. There are infinite possibilities for good in the system, which merits, and does receive, the wise co-operation of parents and students.

School Organizations
The Zenobian literary society has a new pin, a plain gold Z. Its program committee has been appointed with Elisabeth Greeley of Winnetka chairman.
The German club has had its first meting with Mr. Hildebrand as speaker in German on the German scientists, Heckel, Von Behr and Mendel. Dorothy Wilson gave a piano solo, "The Rustle of Spring." Malcolm Melville of Wilmette is president of the club, Milton Griswold is vice-president, Ruth Lieber secretary, and Clara Snydacker chairman of the program committee.
The senior class has had its elections. President, David Nethercott; vice-president, Albert Wigglesworth; secretary, Ruth Lieber; treasurer, Edward Parmelee.
The Junion class has also had its election. President, Lyman Dunbar; vice-president, Donald Sample; secretary and treasurer Helen Osgood.
The Echo's board consists of the following members thus far: from the student body, Malcolm Melville is editor-in-chief, Edward Pringle and Stanley Clague are business managers. From the faculty, Mr. Walker is literary advisor, Mr. Boyle and Mr. Hand, the business advisors. Subscriptions for the paper have been taken in assembly and the year promises to be a good one.

Athletics
All athletic work is now in full swing, with both boys and girls' classes going. The schedule for boys and girls is the same, the sixth period is given over to the junior and seniors, the seventh to the sophomores, and the eighth to freshmen.
New Trier was victgorious in two of three games played Saturday. The lightweight team defeated Austin, 20 to 0 in a game played at New Trir, and the soccer team defeated the Carl Schultz high school, 2 to 0 in a game played on the Schultz field. In this game Merritt Brush and Arthur Davis kicked the goal. The heavyweight team was defeated 28 to 14 at Elgin.
