- Schools in New Trier Township decided to keep school open on Veterans' Day this year instead of declaring a holiday, and honoring veterans by sharing their stories. Walter Reed (nee Werner Rindsberg), a Jewish, German-born, U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II, visited Romona School. Students at Central School honored 11 veterans of families connected to the school. Teacher Jim Tigney recounted the story of a flag given to the school three years ago by a relative of Joanna B. Demski, who werved in the Women's Army Corps in World War II. At Wilmette Junior High School students met with reservist and staff sergeant Devon Harle, 31, mother of two toddlers. She is the daughter-in-law of staff member, Sue O'Keefe.
