It has been a matter of much regret for many months that congested conditions at the Wilmette Post Office have caused delays in the sorting and delivery of the mail. The six carriers authorized for the local office, probably are the victims of circumstances more than any other local public servant and have often been worked harder than any one can conceive in trying to deliver the great bulk of mail. Strenuous efforts have been made during the past few months to procure at least the appointment of an added carrier. The postmaster, W. E. Hess, has taken the matter up with the authorities at Washington and after compiling a detailed report of conditions existing here, covering averages of hours of overwork, amount of mail carried over the weight prescribed, etc., has gained his point with the government officials. On Monday Hess received an order to appoint one more carrier for the village. William H. Stuart, colored, who has been serving as regular substitute carrier since he ranked first on the list of eligibles [unclear], has been named. He will assume his permanent duties tomorrow, May 1. At present Stuart is carrying Will Saunders' route. Mr. Saunders is ill in his home with pneumonia.
