A maid in the home of Mr. Percy W. Andrews, 411 Lake avenue, unwittingly saved her employer from thefts of a large quantity of silver and other valuables on the first floor of the home, when she returned home about 10:30 o'clock Sunday night and frightened away thieves who were helping themselves to all jewelry and [illegible] they could find in the sleeping [illegible] on the second floor. Every room on the second floor was ransacked and much jewelry including several costly metal pins belonging to Mr. Andrew and Mrs. Andrew's watch, her savings bank containing a [illegible], gold thimble and other valuable articles were taken. None of the silver or other valuables on the first floor were taken.
[illegible] the maid did not know that she had been of great service to the family in returning home at the opportune moment until she had been in the house for some time. Other members of the family were away from home. Freda returned about 10:30 o'clock and before going to her room remained in the downstairs hall for a little while. It is thought that as she entered the rear door, the robbers, who were upstairs, heard the [illegible] of the opening door and made their escape out by the front door. When she went upstairs and found the rooms in disorder, she realized that thieves had visited the home and gave an alarm. No trace of the thieves was found.
Another feature of the robbey is the fact that the home was not fired by the [illegible]. Burned matches, a large quantity of them, were found in every room on the floor, bed clothing and other inflamable material. All the blinds had been carefully drawn by the robbers so that reflections from the matches could not be seen by outsiders.
It is thought that the thieves may be the same who entered several Evanston homes Sunday night, as their method of work was almost identical with that reported in Evanston.- Featured Link
