Jacob Foy Guthrie was arrested for a series of burglaries of mansions on the South Side of Chicago. He had stolen $350,000 worth of art and forged $11,800 worth of checks. Police found that Guthrie had newsclippings with information on potential robbery targets on the North Shore. The list included James A. Patton, Charles F. Gray, Norman W. Williams, David R. Forgan and the estate of D. H. Burnham, all of Evanston. Detectives working on the case retrieved many stolen items and will be returning them to their owners. The First National Bank of Chicago recovered $6,800 of $11,800 that Guthrie had obtained through forgery of the signature of Mrs. Mia H. Wilson, 4613 Drexel Boulevard, Chicago. Dr. George J. Spencer, City Physician, examined college-bred Guthrie and concluded he was "a victim of kleptomania". Prof Charles Richmond Henderson, director of the department of sociology at the University of Chicago and expert on criminology said he was an example of a "cultured criminal".
